'Science' in Service of the Agenda

Starting in the mid-20th century, companies began distorting and manipulating science to favor specific commercial interests.

Big tobacco is both the developer and the poster child of this strategy. When strong evidence that smoking caused lung cancer emerged in the 1950s, the tobacco industry began a campaign to obscure this fact.

The Unmaking of Science

The tobacco industry scientific disinformation campaign sought to disrupt and delay further studies, as well as to cast scientific doubt on the link between cigarette smoking and harms. This campaign lasted for almost 50 years, and was extremely successful…until it wasn’t.

This tobacco industry’s strategic brilliance lay in the use of a marketing and advertising campaign (otherwise known as propaganda) to create scientific uncertainty and sow doubts in the minds of the general public. This, combined with legislative “lobbying” and strategic campaign “donations” undermined public health efforts and regulatory interventions to inform the public about the harms of smoking and the regulation of tobacco products.

Disrupting normative science has become a de rigueur component of the pharmaceutical industry business model. A new pharmaceutical product is not based on need; it is based on market size and profitability. When new data threatens the market of a pharmaceutical product, then that pharma company will try to sprout the seeds of scientific uncertainty and lack of proof. For instance, clinical trials can be easily coopted to meet specified end-points positive for the drug products. Other ways to manipulate a clinical trial include manipulating the dosing schedule and amounts. As these practices have been exposed, people no longer trust the science.

  1. In Ayn Rand’s epic novel “Atlas Shrugged” published in 1957, “the science” – i.e., “The STATE Science Institute,” has produced nothing more than a “new” cleaning solution – one no better than those already in use, and a sonic “Death Ray.”

    Meanwhile, a private entrepreneur has produced a new metal stronger and lighter than steel, while another created a new Railroad line with rails and infrastructure utilizing the new metal. It was to serve a new booming oil field where another entrepreneur had discovered why some rocks “burn,” and how to obtain from them vast new quantities of oil!

    Unbeknown to all of them, another young genius was creating a motor to either dramatically enhance existing “motors” of the world, or to help stop them. He chose the latter! Why?

    I find myself reminded of “the science,” and the constant admonition to FOLLOW “the science!” The “science” of Man-Made Climate Change. You know, what “the science” had previously termed Man-Made Global Cooling and then, when temps refused to comply, “the science” of Man-Made Global Warming!

    Apparently, the current “science” of Man-Made Climate Change emerging because those pesky temps cannot be counted upon to comply with “the science’s” models!

    Alas, when I try to follow “the science” it always keeps leading me back to “the money.” In that regard the money has led me to follow “the alarms.”

    I have become alarmingly suspicious of “the money” who fly in private jets to a meeting whereat they discuss how to:

    – take away my meat in exchange for “other” sources of protein

    – eliminate my gas furnace, gas hot water heater, and gas clothes dryer

    – reduce the effectiveness of my washing machine, dishwasher, and refrigerator

    – and if all of that wasn’t enough, mandate that my automobile must become an electric one, while raising the cost of it and the fuel it requires!

    Each, apparently, part of “the science’s” war on hydrocarbons!

    As “the money” attend their gatherings, they are housed in luxury while dining in opulence – consuming and digesting the finest in steaks, caviar, as well as other delicacies and wines, while enjoying the most expensive of entertainment, as they debate what must become the fate of “the people,” as “the science” continues to follow “the money.”

    They then return from whence they came in the singularly most- wonderful hydrocarbon-consuming machines that the mind of Man has yet to produce! The entire affair paid for by “the people,” that “the money” wishes to force to follow “the science!” FORCE them to dramatically lower their standards of living by being FORCED to comply with the wisdom of “the money,” as it claims to follow “the science!”

    I am afraid it is not “who,” but “where” is John Galt? Yes, his fellow entrepreneurs are slowly disappearing, but there seems to be previously unknown ones that emerge and give a “boost” to the motors Galt is trying to stop!

    In any case, set a good example and vote accordingly, as you follow a different “brand” of money. A brand that always follows ACTUAL science!

    A brand which will lead to where John Galt has always existed in the first place, as he rationally followed Science. You know, the science not yet a victim of “the science.” Because, by definition, it can never fall victim to “the science!”
