Update (1015ET): Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said on X that according to new whistleblowers, “MOST of Trump’s security detail working the event last Saturday were not even Secret Service,” and were instead “drawn from the department’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).
According to Hawley, “DHS assigned unprepared and inexperienced personnel.”
The Missouri Senator sent a letter to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, which reads: “According to the allegations, the July 13 rally was considered to be a ‘loose’ security event.”
“For example, detection canines were not used to monitor entry and detect threats in the usual manner. Individuals without proper designations were able to gain access to backstage areas. Department personnel did not appropriately police the security buffer around the podium and were also not stationed at regular intervals around the event’s security perimeter.”
US Secret Service whistleblowers have approached the House Judiciary Committee, claiming that there were limited resources to cover former President Donald Trump last weekend due to the North Atlantic Treato Organization (NATO) summit in Washington DC, as well as first lady Jill Biden’s campaign rally in Pittsburgh, PA.
Chairman Jim Jordan has demanded answers FBI Director Christopher Wray, according to the Daily Caller.
“Whistleblowers have disclosed to the Committee that the USSS led two briefings regarding the July 13 campaign rally on July 8, 2024, with the Western Pennsylvania Fusion Center (WPFC) and other stakeholders, to discuss the upcoming, unrelated visits by President Trump and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden,” reads a Thursday letter from Jordan to Wray. “The USSS Special Agent in Charge Tim Burke reportedly told law enforcement partners that the USSS had limited resources that week because the agency was covering the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Washington, D.C. FBI personnel were present at those briefings. While the Committee recognizes that the FBI is one of many agencies represented in the WPFC, it is the lead federal investigative arm and a key source of intelligence on potential threats for special events in its area of responsibility,” he continued.

I have no past or present relationship to the S.S but I have worked events with them, and other 1811-employing Federal Agencies, and what I can tell you is that the same motivators that apply to anyone else, namely self-advancement and self-preservation, apply to any Federal Agent.
I was posted with a S.S. Agent at a holding area that was going to be a destination for the President/VP, and we were briefed along with another member of my agency along with a Defense Intelligence Agency 1811 if I am recalling correctly..
He is a good guy, and I am not at all criticizing him – I recall learning that his fiance was involved in Equestrian activities with a woman that I knew at that time. We were approached by a “do you know who I am” Donor-type along with a very well known celebrity (anyone would know this person by name) who wanted access to this area, and as I began to try to de-escalate this while denying them access, I noted that the SS guy had ‘beat feet’ and was halfway down the hall from me… he had basically left the area entirely.
My own agency supervisor was not far off, and spun around to waddle away as soon as the confrontation I was in became audible.
Basically, the orders we had been given were absolute (although pretty poorly spelled, articulated and notably half-assed) but no one would actually follow them because no one wanted to get into trouble, or be singled out.
When I told my agency co-worker about the situation that I had encountered, he mentioned a very similar incident in his position, with the DIA 1811.
It was – for instance – very unpopular assignment wise from what I have heard on many occasions, to get put on the Harry Reid detail for specific reasons. People dont want to screw up a good assignment by being the first one to do something unpopular, because its easy to get bounced to a Harry Reid detail, or worse, if you stand out by pissing off someone with the clout to cause you problems.
What you really want to ”train” for is to encourage people to be adamant about doing the unpopular thing, when they need to, and making it clear that you will back them for it as long as they are diplomatic, professional, and competent. If the leadership itself is not diplomatic, professional or competent, you will find that most people enter into self-preservation mode, find a way to pass the buck to someone else, and make excuses for their own failure to do the right thing.
