She Said That? 10/25/14

From Hillary Clinton, who unfortunately needs no introduction:

This one may come to rival you-know-who’s execrable, “You didn’t build that” comment. Ms. Clinton is absolutely right that trickle down economics has not worked. Wealth has increasingly gone to Washington, which is now the richest metropolitan area in the country, and it’s not trickling back down to the people and businesses from whom it was stolen. If business doesn’t create jobs, who does? Government? Her remark about her husband bringing “arithmetic” to Washington is a non sequitur, but we know he brought Arkansas political gangsterism, take-no-prisoners ruthlessness, and a rather relaxed view of the law and his marriage vows to the nation’s capital.

From Charles Wyplosz, professor of international economics at the Graduate Institute Geneva:

What we see now is the revelation that the situation in eurzone is very precarious. We are sitting on a powder keg.

Wall Street Journal, 10/17/14

If it is a revelation to the good professor that a bunch of Europe’s welfare states are going bankrupt, then we have proof positive that the US is not the only nation with empty suits in the economics departments of prestigious institutions of higher learning.

From Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank:

We don’t see a serious risk of bubbles in the sovereign market.

“Draghi: No Risk of Euro Bond Bubble,” Wall Street Journal, 10/13/14

Surely if a central banker and Goldman Sachs alumnus does not see any bubble risk for bonds from governments in Europe, some of whose economies are shrinking and have over 20 percent unemployment, there must not be any bubble risk. Wasn’t it former chairman Bernanke who assured us—just before it blew up—that there was no housing bubble?

From Gwyneth Paltrow, introducing President Obama at a fundraiser at her home in Brentwood, California.

I am one of your biggest fans, if not the biggest. You’re so handsome that I can’t speak properly. It would be wonderful if we were able to give this man all of the power that he needs to pass the things that he needs to pass.

Canada Free Press, “Gwyneth Paltrow and the Celebrity in Chief Who Would Be King,” 10/10/14 http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/66664

Interestingly, if Ms. Paltrow had left this star-studded Hollywood fundraiser, it would have lowered the average IQ at the gathering.

From Chris Matthews, illustrious member of the Fourth Estate:

The fact is, this president has the opportunity to put it together, but he needs to stop playing politics, stop running for office, stop playing the ethnic groups, and say, ‘Look, I’ve only got two years left. I have to get something done.’ The Daily Caller, quoting from Andrea Mitchell Reports, 10/8/14

This from a man who has, from the time he first became smitten with The One, abandoned all pretense of political objectivity and journalistic integrity, and insinuated that anyone who questioned his love interest’s public pronouncements, veracity, policies, or executive performance was a racist. Now the president is supposed to quit politicking and playing ethnic groups against each other? Sounds like his hyperloyal cheerleader is a bit disillusioned and confused, counseling the president to stop the tactics that made “Hardball” Matthews a big fish in the very small, abysmally rated, MSNBC puddle. Is Matthews not getting “the same thrill up his leg?”

From Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan:

You can’t end this terrorism [Islamic State offensive in Kobani, within sight of the Turkish-Syrian border] just by airstrikes. If you don’t support them on the ground by cooperating with those who take up a ground operation, the airstrikes won’t do it. Wall Street Journal, 10/8/14, pg. A6

Could that ground support perhaps come from Turkey, with its 600,000-troop military, 3,500 tanks, and 1,000 modern aircraft, including helicopters? Although the Islamic State’s black flags in Kobani are visible from Turkey, so far Turkey has committed no boots on the ground. The best guess is that they are going to play the time honored game: let the US fight your wars.
