Get the troops out of DC, by Sean Collins

Nothing says “police state” quite like a massive troop presence, fences, and barbed- and razor-wired fences in the nation’s capital. From Sean Collins at spiked-online.org:

Biden’s war on ‘domestic terror’ is wildly disproportionate and authoritarian.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a national terrorism bulletin yesterday, warning that extremists ‘may be emboldened’ by the 6 January riot at the Capitol to ‘incite or commit violence’. This alert came the day after reports that the 7,000 National Guard currently on duty in Washington, DC will remain until ‘at least’ the end of March.

Just consider how extraordinary these measures are. This is the first-ever DHS terrorism bulletin that targets domestic American citizens. The Biden administration is saying that the attack on the Capital was not simply a riot but an act of terrorism. For the first time, they are publicly announcing that far-right organisations and Trump supporters should be labelled terrorists on a par with al-Qaeda or the Islamic State.

The militarisation of the nation’s capital is also remarkable – and worrying. Federal call-ups of the National Guard are rare, having been used only 16 times since the founding. Such deployments have typically sought to quell specific, ongoing riots, such as those in Detroit in 1967 or the riots that followed the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles in 1992. But there is no such violence in DC at the moment, nor any imminent threat of it. Some 26,000 National Guard were deployed in advance of Joe Biden’s inauguration last week, based on hyped-up reports of a ‘heightened threat environment’ in DC and state capitals. But in the event nothing much happened (the only notable attack was Antifa smashing up windows of the Democratic Party offices in Portland).

Reflecting the Authoritarian Climate, Washington Will Remain Militarized Until At Least March, by Glenn Greenwald

Washington D.C. has faced far graver threats than those supposedly posed by the January 6 protestors without resorting to virtual martial law. From Glenn Greenwald at greenwald.substack.com:

The idea of troops in U.S. streets for an extended period of time — an extreme measure even when temporary — has now become close to a sacred consensus.

Washington, DC has been continuously militarized beginning the week leading up to Joe Biden’s inauguration, when 20,000 National Guard troops were deployed onto the streets of the nation’s capital. The original justification was that this show of massive force was necessary to secure the inauguration in light of the January 6 riot at the Capitol.

But with the inauguration over and done, those troops remain and are not going anywhere any time soon. Working with federal law enforcement agencies, the National Guard Bureau announced on Monday that between 5,000 and 7,000 troops will remain in Washington until at least mid-March.

The rationale for this extraordinary, sustained domestic military presence has shifted several times, typically from anonymous U.S. law enforcement officials. The original justification — the need to secure the inaugural festivities — is obviously no longer operative.

So the new claim became that the impeachment trial of former President Trump that will take place in the Senate in February necessitated military reinforcements. On Sunday, Politico quoted “four people familiar with the matter” to claim that “Trump’s upcoming Senate impeachment trial poses a security concern that federal law enforcement officials told lawmakers last week requires as many as 5,000 National Guard troops to remain in Washington through mid-March.”

An Eye-Witness’s Shocking Account of What’s REALLY Happening During the Seattle Riots, by Daisy Luther

No weapons and no political support make it impossible for the National Guard when its brought in to reinstate law and order. From Daisy Luther at theorganicprepper.com:

A social media post (which has been removed) by a member of the Washington National Guard has been shared more than 7000 times since it was written on June 12th. It’s a true education in mob mentality.

As Toby Cowern says, “Look how much ‘othering’ has been done already. Once that’s happening there’s a big problem.”

He’s right – and here’s the shocking truth about what’s really going on in Seattle from a person who had a front-row ticket to the mayhem.

An eye-witness account

I previously said I had a lot to say regarding my experiences while in downtown Seattle [Incoming VERY long post…]. When I came home, I was exhausted, angry, and saddened by what I had experienced. I said I needed to share what happened, but I also said I needed some time to rest and reflect. My unit was activated for 12 days. We worked long hours but we continued to stay dedicated to the state and the mission. I can’t stop that now. I’ve been up all night, trying my best to put into words what I experienced and observed. This is too important to wait. I rarely post on social media, but I’m making this post, hoping it reaches those that want to know the truth. I can imagine, given the current environment, this post may cause some controversy. That is not my intention what-so-ever. I agree the excessive use of force in Minnesota was inexcusable but reacting with hatred and violence is contradictory to the message of peace and change. Either way, people need to know what’s actually happening behind the guise of this “movement.” Whether localized or nationalized, what I witnessed NEEDS TO STOP!

D.C. National Guard Chief Fired Days Before Trump Inauguration: “The Timing Is Extremely Unusual” by Tyler Durden

This story is just weird. All sorts of protests are planned around Trump’s inauguration in Washington, and President Obama fires the National Guard General in charge of security, effective midday the day of the inauguration. That he’s being fired by Obama suggests he’s extremely competent. If the spoiled brats erupt in the violence that appears to be the subtext of many of their public utterances, it will be a real tragedy…if every last one of them isn’t thrown in jail. From Tyler Durden at zerohedge.com:

[CLARIFICATION: THE ZERO HEDGE STORY IMPLIES THAT IT WAS PRESIDENT OBAMA WHO ACCEPTED GENERAL SCHWARTZ’S RESIGNATION:

“Is this just another part of Obama’s “smooth” transition? Or is something even more sinister at work here, since we already know that anti-Trump activists are planning “the biggest protest in US history” on the day of the inauguration?”

HOWEVER, THE WASHINGTON POST STORY ZERO HEDGE REFERENCES IS MORE AMBIGUOUS. IT WAS IN FACT THE TRUMP TRANSITION TEAM THAT ACCEPTED SCHWARTZ’S RESIGNATION. IT IS CUSTOMARY FOR POLITICAL APPOINTEES TO OFFER THEIR RESIGNATIONS TO AN INCOMING PRESIDENT. THAT IS WHAT SCHWARTZ DID AND TRUMP ACCEPTED THE RESIGNATION. UNNAMED ARMY OFFICIALS SAID THE DECISION WAS TRUMP OFFICIALS’, WHILE UNNAMED TRUMP OFFICIALS SAY THAT WAS WHAT THE ARMY WANTED, WHICH MAY IMPLY THAT PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS INVOLVED. FROM THE POST:

Military officials and Trump transition officials provided contradictory versions of the decision to replace Schwartz. As is customary for presidential appointees, the general submitted a letter of resignation to give the new administration a clean start.

Two military officials with knowledge of the situation said the Trump team decided to accept the resignation. A person close to the transition said transition officials wanted to keep Schwartz in the job for continuity, but the Army pushed to replace him.

OBVIOUSLY SLL, WORKING OFF THE ZERO HEDGE STORY, MAY HAVE WRONGLY ATTRIBUTED THE FIRING, OR ACCEPTED RESIGNATION, TO OBAMA, WHEN IT IS IN FACT NOT CLEAR EXACTLY WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR SCHWARTZ’S TERMINATION. I AM GRATEFUL TO READER DAVE WALDEN FOR POINTING ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION ON THIS (SEE HIS COMMENT BELOW)]

“It doesn’t make sense to can the general in the middle of an active deployment,” rages D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) after Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz, who heads the D.C. National Guard and is an integral part of overseeing the inauguration, has been ordered removed from command effective Jan. 20, 12:01 p.m., just as Donald Trump is sworn in as president.

As The Washington Post reports, Maj. Gen. Errol R. Schwartz’s departure will come in the midst of the presidential ceremony, classified as a national special security event — and while thousands of his troops are deployed to help protect the nation’s capital during an inauguration he has spent months helping to plan.

“The timing is extremely unusual,” Schwartz said in an interview Friday morning, confirming a memo announcing his ouster that was obtained by The Washington Post.

During the inauguration, Schwartz would command not only the members of the D.C. guard but also an additional 5,000 unarmed troops sent in from across the country to help. He also would oversee military air support protecting the nation’s capital during the inauguration.

“My troops will be on the street,” Schwartz, who turned 65 in October, said, “I’ll see them off but I won’t be able to welcome them back to the armory.” He said that he would “never plan to leave a mission in the middle of a battle.”

Schwartz, who was appointed to head the guard by President George W. Bush in 2008, maintained the position through President Obama’s two terms. He said his orders came from the Pentagon but that he doesn’t know who made the decision.

D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) blasted the decision to remove Schwartz, especially on Inauguration Day.

“It doesn’t make sense to can the general in the middle of an active deployment,” Mendelson said. He added that Schwartz’s sudden departure would be a long-term loss for the District. “He’s been really very good at working with the community and my impression was that he was good for the Guard.”
