Covington High School Student Files $250 Million Defamation Suit Against Washington Post, by Tyler Burden

You can bet that Nicolas Sandmann, the high student in the infamous video, had lawyers lined up around the block to work on contingency for this suit. It was filed in US District Court in Kentucky, and Sandmann’s odds of at worst a big settlement look pretty good. The Post’s lawyers would be fools to let this go to a jury trial. From Tyler Durden at zerohedge.com:

After an investigation conducted by the Covington Diocese turned up no evidence that 16-year-old high school student Nicholas Sandmann confronted Native American activist Nathan Phillips during a March for Life rally at the Lincoln Memorial last month, seemingly confirming that the mainstream press was incorrect to pillory the white, MAGA-hat wearing teen for a confrontation that never actually happened, lawyers for Sandmann filed the first of what are expected to be many defamation lawsuits demanding compensatory and punitive damages for leading an Internet mob that villified Sandmann and his peers.

According to Reuters, lawyers Lin Wood and Todd McMurtry are seeking $250 million in damages from the Washington Post on behalf of Sandmann, a sum equal to the amount that billionaire Jeff Bezos paid to buy the paper in 2013.

The suit claims that the paper – which helped publicize a now infamous photo that helped trigger an Internet mob that swiftly outed the teen and demanded he be punished – led the hate campaign against Sandmann – and failed to practice proper journalistic due diligence – “because he was the white, Catholic student wearing a red ‘Make America Great Again’ souvenir cap on a school field trip to the January 18 March for Life in Washington, D.C. when he was unexpectedly and suddenly confronted by Nathan Phillips (‘Phillips’), a known Native American activist, who beat a drum and sang loudly within inches of his face (‘the January 18 incident’).”

What Will It Take To Make You Understand And Accept That They Hate You? by Kurt Schlichter

Many of them want to kill you. From Kurt Schlichter at townhall.com:

What Will It Take To Make You Understand And Accept That They Hate You?

You need to die because of your smile.

That’s the position of our enemies, and we know it because they told us – openly, proudly, in the garbage public forum that is Twitter and elsewhere. Oh, they backtracked a little when the extent of their killing fantasies got exposed, scampering like their insect analogy, the roach, when someone flips on the kitchen light. But that kid in DC with the Frigidaireborne reefer ranger banging that drum in his baffled mug? They wanted that kid to die for having a Wrong Smile.

Cue the excuse chorus: “That’s nonsense! We just wanted to pummel that kid and then destroy him, his family and and all his classmates! Don’t look behind the curtain at the woodchipper comments and bomb threats, you cisnormative monsters!

Think of what they would do with real power…

Accept that that kid was you, and me. If they’ll ice a kid for not having the right grin, they’ll waste you or me in a heartbeat. Murder is, after all, how leftists roll. The USSR, Red China, Cambodia, North Korea, Cuba – that cadaver-strewn litany teaches what’s lurking at the bottom of the slope we’re sliding down. The Dems are spooning with socialism, and the goal of socialism is written in blood on the pages of history. The unapproved must be liquidated, and they are making no secret that you are unapproved.

The Shocking Anatomy of an Internet Witch Hunt, by Dagny Taggart

So much vitriol, so little facts and evidence. From Dagny Taggart at theorganicprepper.com:

The recent internet witch hunt shows us that humanity is heading into dangerous territory.

This week, we explained how the mainstream media twisted the story about the “MAGA Kids” from Covington Catholic high school and their “confrontation” with Native Elder Nathan Phillips in D.C. last Friday.

A short video clip and an image of an alleged confrontation between the students and a small group of Native Americans spread like wildfire over the weekend, resulting in widespread condemnation of the boys on social media.

The story is still up front in the news and on social media, and even though all evidence presented so far supports the kids’ side of the story, many are still trying to find reasons to vilify the boys.

Based on what I have observed all over social media over the last three days, there are two things that Nick Sandmann, the boy who is at the center of the story, is “guilty” of:  smiling and wearing a MAGA hat.

To many, those two things are enough to justify attempts to dig up any bit of dirt on Sandmann, his school, and his peers. The effort some are putting into making these teenagers the worst people on the planet ever is quite troubling.

Some people who believed the initial story and called for actions against the boys have since apologized and admitted they were wrong for jumping the gun.

Identity Stalinism, by Steve Sailer

The Covington Catholic tempest is apiece with overall Democratic strategy. From Steve Sailer at takimag.com:

The media’s latest Days of Rage, in which a white boy drove the national press into a frenzy by smiling at the leftist Person of Color banging a drum in his face, was like a greatest-hits collection of my old observations. So I’m going to take a victory lap to review how ideas I’ve been offering for years help explain much of the latest elite fury.

Tucker Carlson summed up his eloquent dissection of this outbreak of Hate Hysteria as: “It’s not really about race.”

Actually…it’s really about race.

That’s why so many journalists and Hollywood figures explained how they could tell the kid was evil just by looking him. It’s written on his face! Sure, he didn’t do anything, but did you see that smirk? Anybody who looks like him deserves to be punched.

The least inappropriate way for a white male to respond to being berated by his racial superiors is like that Starbucks barista who got shouted at with a megaphone from three feet away. And even his stoicism seemed suspiciously dignified.

The Media Wildly Mischaracterized That Video of Covington Catholic Students Confronting a Native American Veteran, by Robby Soave

Egregious mistakes were made, but apologies have been few. That may change once the lawsuits are filed. From Robby Soave at reason.com:

Journalists who uncritically accepted Nathan Phillips’ story got this completely wrong.

Partial video footage of students from a Catholic high school allegedly harassing a Native American veteran after the anti-abortion March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., over the weekend quickly went viral, provoking widespread condemnation of the kids on social media. Various media figures and Twitter users called for them to be doxed, shamed, or otherwise punished, and school administrators said they would consider expulsion.

But the rest of the video—nearly two hours of additional footage showing what happened before and after the encounter—adds important context that strongly contradicts the media’s narrative.

Far from engaging in racially motivated harassment, the group of mostly white, MAGA-hat-wearing male teenagers remained relatively calm and restrained despite being subjected to incessant racist, homophobic, and bigoted verbal abuse by members of the bizarre religious sect Black Hebrew Israelites, who were lurking nearby. The BHI has existed since the late 19th century, and is best describes as a black nationalist cult movement; its members believe they are descendants of the ancient Israelites, and often express condemnation of white people, Christians, and gays. DC-area Black Hebrews are known to spout particularly vile bigotry.
