Would Vitamin D Have Saved Half of COVID Deaths? By Dr. Joseph Mercola

There were a few voices that from the beginning advised taking Vitamin D to ward off Covid. From Dr. Joseph Mercola at theburningplatform.com:

Story at-a-glance

  • Vitamin D supplementation cut risk of death from COVID-19 by 51% and reduced risk of admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) by 72%
  • The results were deemed “conclusive” and suggest “a definitive association between the protective role of vitamin D and ICU hospitalization” from COVID-19
  • Vitamin D may protect against COVID-19 by maintaining pulmonary barrier function, boosting the innate immune response and reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines
  • In another study, none of the patients with severe COVID-19 who received high-dose vitamin D died; instead, 100% of the group improved
  • Regulatory agencies around the world are largely industry-funded, which is likely why they aren’t recommending vitamin D — a “dirt cheap” intervention — for COVID-19

I launched an information campaign to raise awareness about the use of vitamin D for COVID-19 back in June 2020. My own vitamin D review was published October 31, 2020, in the high-impact, peer-reviewed journal Nutrients.1

At the time, 14 observational studies suggested vitamin D levels are inversely linked with the incidence or severity of COVID-19, and my paper concluded, “The evidence seems strong enough that people and physicians can use or recommend vitamin D supplements to prevent or treat COVID-19.”2

New Study on Vitamin D Combating COVID, by Dr. Joseph Mercola

There were people, including Dr. Joseph Mercola, who were saying at the onset of Covid that Vitamin D was an excellent preventative. They were of course ignored, but now the studies are catching up. From Mercola at lewrockwell.com:

Optimizing your vitamin D level is a foundational element to lower your risk of COVID-19. This simple step will also help you ward off many types of viral infections, because vitamin D is an immunomodulatory agent.

This point — that vitamin D helps combat COVID-19 — was widely censored and deemed “misinformation” during the pandemic. But yet another study — this one published in Scientific Reports1 — shows the association between vitamin D and COVID-19 protection cannot be ignored.

About half the U.S. population has deficient levels of vitamin D, and rates of vitamin D deficiency are even higher in people with darker skin, those living in higher latitudes in the winter, nursing home residents and people with reduced sun exposure. Among groups with low levels of vitamin D, rates of COVID-19 are higher.2

Vitamin D Supplementation Reduces COVID-19 Infection, Death

Researchers from Johns Hopkins University, the University of Chicago and the Department of Veterans Health Affairs conducted a large-scale pharmacoepidemiologic study of the association between vitamin D3 and D2 supplementation and the probability of COVID-19 infection and mortality.3

“Vitamin D deficiency has long been associated with reduced immune function that can lead to viral infection. Several studies have shown that vitamin D deficiency … increases the risk of infection with COVID-19,” they wrote.4

Well Being: Disinformation Assault on Vitamin D, by Jeremy Harrigan

The propaganda hyenas attack Vitamin D as millions have discovered that it’s a cheap way to help prevent Covid. Can’t have something that’s cheap, effective, and safe competing with expensive, ineffective, and deadly vaccines. From Jeremy Harrigan, MD, MS, at rwmalonemd.substack.com:

Factchecking The Washington Post Big Pharma propaganda

If enough people wake up, pulling back the curtain on vitamin D as an alternative to Covid vaccines would be a huge blow to the “safe and effective” emergency use authorization (EUA) narrative supporting more COVID vaccines and booster shots. As we approach three years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, if the medical establishment/ Big Government and Big Pharma continues to have it their way, less vitamin D supplements will flow into American households as time marches on. And if people take it for granted that taking low levels of vitamin D is good enough, the Pharma-captured HHS would be fine with that (short of banning it if they could).

We previously briefly reviewed the medical history and literature supporting the use of vitamin D for preventing disease associated with respiratory viruses in this May 07, 2022 essay titled  “Preventable Deaths and D3. The Ugly History of Vitamin D3 and Fauci’s pro-Vaccine Bias”.

The pharmaceutical/biodefense/medical complex, working together with corporate media, has succeeded in putting vitamin D in a bad light through their own propaganda and misinformation campaigns. The general public continues to be left out in the dark. These are the same forces which have worked so hard to memory hole, forget, and even discredit the natural immunity which develops from infection and recovery from SARS-CoV-2 infection. And ultimately it never occurs to them that perhaps higher doses of vitamin D would have been the first consideration before using propaganda and coercion to drive the public to hastily line up at the pharmacy or at vaccine clinics to get the series of experimental EUA-authorized genetic vaccine shots for a pathogen which poses moderate risk.

Insufficient vitamin D linked to fourfold increase in risk of death among Covid-19 patients, by Paul Cullen

People like the late Bill Sardi and Dr. Joseph Mercola were touting Vitamin D as a preventative of covid back when it all began. They were ignored or censored. From Paul Cullen at irishtimes.com:

Irish researchers find unvaccinated patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to suffer severe disease and death

Covid-19 patients with low vitamin D levels are more likely to suffer severe disease and death, according to a study by Irish scientists.

Unvaccinated Caucasian adults with low vitamin D have higher mortality due to Sars CoV-2 pneumonia, according to the small-scale study by researchers at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown and Technological University Dublin. This is not explained by confounders such as age or obesity and is not closely linked to inflammation, they say.

Having an insufficient level of vitamin D was associated with a greater than fourfold increased mortality risk, according to the study, published in the journal Nutrients.

The study looked at the outcomes of 232 unvaccinated patients at Connolly hospital, all of whom had Covid-19 and required supplemental oxygen. Patients on steroid treatment were not recruited for the study in order, the authors say, to eliminate the effect their use might have on measures of both vitamin D and inflammation.

More Evidence Vitamin D Is Effective in Preventing COVID-19, by Dr. Joseph Mercola

A personal testimonial. When Covid got started, I began riding my bike here in sunny Albuquerque an hour a day. I recently had Covid. It lasted about three days and with a little ivermectin it was gone. Vitamin D deficiency is a Covid comorbidity. From Dr. Joseph Mercola at theburningplatform.com:

vitamin D

Story at-a-glance

  • Recent research assessing the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation for the prevention of COVID-19 in frontline health care workers found only 6.4% of those taking vitamin D tested positive for COVID, compared to 24.5% of controls
  • The treatment group received 4,000 international units (IUs) of vitamin D per day for 30 days. The use of fixed dosing is a shortcoming of this study, as the most accurate way to assess vitamin D’s benefits is by comparing the effects of different serum vitamin D levels
  • Data from GrassrootsHealth’s D*Action studies suggest the optimal level for disease prevention and good health is a vitamin D level between 60 ng/mL and 80 ng/mL. The cutoff for sufficiency appears to be around 40 ng/mL
  • Sun exposure is exponentially superior to oral supplementation, as it not only triggers vitamin D production but also melatonin production inside your mitochondria

It’s a Pandemic of the Vitamin D Deficient: A few dollars of D3 in hospital reduced deaths 60%, by JoNova

The failure to even mention Vitamin D as a Covid preventative ranks right up there with disparaging Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine as medical establishment crimes. From JoNova at joannenova.com.au:

Did someone say there’s a hospitalization crisis?

The Sun provides Vitamin D

There is a crisis. People are getting stuck for days extra in hospitals and even dying  because of nutrient deficiencies that we could easily solve.

A new study from Istanbul shows that even if we negligently fail to correct Vitamin D deficiencies before people get sick, we can still save half of the ones who might die with a cheap vitamin, pumped in hospital for about 1/5000th of the daily cost of an ICU bed.

The mortality rate in the unsupplemented group from 2020 was 11%, but in the supplemented group in 2021 it was 5.5%. Imagine what the mortality rate might be if these people weren’t deficient in the first place?

The study shows us that there is a causal connection between low Vitamin D and more severe Covid. It also shows what a train wreck our medical systems are. For the price of a few dollars we can free up a lot of hospital beds and stop a lot of deaths, and we’ve known this might be the case since the beginning, and we’re still not doing it? The incentives are so screwed in our healthcare systems that we’re waiting for doctors in Turkey to do the trials we should have done in February 2020?

Don’t wait til you catch Covid to get your D3 levels tested.

Sort it out now, and supplement if you need it. And aim for the higher end of the normal spectrum. (And take Vitamin K2 as well, though NOT without doc approval if you are on anticoagulants like warfarin, see comments below).

Rapid and Effective Vitamin D Supplementation May Present Better Clinical Outcomes in COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) Patients by Altering Serum INOS1, IL1B, IFNg, Cathelicidin-LL37, and ICAM1

One of the most egregious Covid crimes is the failure of the medical establishment to push Vitamin D as both a preventative of the disease and a cure for those who get it. From myriad authors at pubmed.ncbi.nim.gov:

Background: We aimed to establish an acute treatment protocol to increase serum vitamin D, evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D3 supplementation, and reveal the potential mechanisms in COVID-19.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 867 COVID-19 cases. Then, a prospective study was conducted, including 23 healthy individuals and 210 cases. A total of 163 cases had vitamin D supplementation, and 95 were followed for 14 days. Clinical outcomes, routine blood biomarkers, serum levels of vitamin D metabolism, and action mechanism-related parameters were evaluated.

Results: Our treatment protocol increased the serum 25OHD levels significantly to above 30 ng/mL within two weeks. COVID-19 cases (no comorbidities, no vitamin D treatment, 25OHD <30 ng/mL) had 1.9-fold increased risk of having hospitalization longer than 8 days compared with the cases with comorbidities and vitamin D treatment. Having vitamin D treatment decreased the mortality rate by 2.14 times. The correlation analysis of specific serum biomarkers with 25OHD indicated that the vitamin D action in COVID-19 might involve regulation of INOS1, IL1B, IFNg, cathelicidin-LL37, and ICAM1.

Conclusions: Vitamin D treatment shortened hospital stay and decreased mortality in COVID-19 cases, even in the existence of comorbidities. Vitamin D supplementation is effective on various target parameters; therefore, it is essential for COVID-19 treatment.

Why won’t our government even inform people about importance of vitamin D? by Daniel Horowitz

The Vitamin D deficient are 3.3 times more likely to contract Covid. Why has Vitamin D received almost no publicity as a preventative and a remedy? From Daniel Horowitz at theblaze.com:

Imagine if rather than running out to buy worthless Chinese face diapers or toilet paper last March, there had been a mad rush to stock up on vitamin D. What would our hospitalization rate have been after the initial wave, and after the early science was clear about the efficacy of vitamin D, had government mailed out free vitamin D to every American (especially in nursing homes)? For a fraction of the cost of a shutdown, waning vaccines, remdesivir, and endless welfare, government could have offered free blood tests of everyone’s vitamin D, C, and zinc levels and advised a plan to bulk up those levels?

Well, we have a new study that demonstrates a good number of hospitalizations could have been avoided. Government agencies that are censoring information on vitamin D can no longer say the same thing about the vaccines, given how Israel is now showing that the vaccine wears off and the country is preparing for the worst run on hospitals ever, despite nearly every adult having been vaccinated. And unlike the vaccines and everything else our government promoted and mandated, vitamin D comes with no risk, numerous other vital benefits, and empowers rather than controls people.

There is a misnomer that those promoting vitamin D for COVID somehow believe that all people have to do after getting the virus is to take vitamin D and they will suddenly get better (although there is evidence it works in the active form). That is obviously an easy straw man for those who oppose preventives and early treatment to knock down. In reality, while vitamin D is definitely important post-infection, it takes several months to bulk up one’s level if it is deficient. A new study recently published in the International Journal of Clinical Practice demonstrates that had Fauci and Co. simply told Americans, especially the vulnerable, to take high doses of Vitamin D (like he does), most of the hospitalizations could have been avoided.

Vitamin D Insufficiency May Account for Almost Nine of Ten COVID-19 Deaths: Time to Act. Comment on: “Vitamin D Deficiency and Outcome of COVID-19 Patients”. by and Ben Schöttker

We’re told to follow the science. Okay, here’s real science: a substantial percentage of Covid patients are Vitamin D deficient, and the death count would be far lower if there had been mass Vitamin D supplementation. From Hermann Brenner and Ben Schöttker at mdpi.com:

Evidence from observational studies is accumulating, suggesting that the majority of deaths due to SARS-CoV-2 infections are statistically attributable to vitamin D insufficiency and could potentially be prevented by vitamin D supplementation. Given the dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic, rational vitamin D supplementation whose safety has been proven in an extensive body of research should be promoted and initiated to limit the toll of the pandemic even before the final proof of efficacy in preventing COVID-19 deaths by randomized trials.
We read, with great interest, the recent article by Radujkovic et al. that reported associations between vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D < 12 ng/mL) or insufficiency (25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL) and death in a cohort of 185 consecutive symptomatic SARS-CoV-2-positive patients admitted to the Medical University Hospital Heidelberg, who were diagnosed and treated between 18 March and 18 June 2020 [1]. In this cohort, 118 patients (64%) had vitamin D insufficiency at recruitment (including 41 patients with vitamin D deficiency), and 16 patients died of the infection. With a covariate-adjusted relative risk of death of 11.3, mortality was much higher among vitamin D insufficient patients than among other patients. When translated to the proportion of deaths in the population that is statistically attributable to vitamin D insufficiency (“population attributable risk proportion”), a key measure of public health relevance of risk factors [2], these results imply that 87% of COVID-19 deaths may be statistically attributed to vitamin D insufficiency and could potentially be avoided by eliminating vitamin D insufficiency.
