These days, to my surprise, people want to talk to me about evil.
In a Substack essay last year, and in my book The Bodies of Others, I raised a question about existential, metaphysical darkness.
I concluded that I had looked at the events of the past two and a half years using all of my classical education, my critical thinking skills, my knowledge of Western and global history and politics; and that, using these tools, I could not explain the years 2020-present.
Indeed I could not explain them in ordinary material, political or historical terms at all.
This is not how human history ordinarily operates.
I could not explain the way the Western world simply switched, from being based at least overtly on values of human rights and decency, to values of death, exclusion and hatred, overnight, en masse — without resorting to reference to some metaphysical evil that goes above and beyond fallible, blundering human agency.
When ordinary would-be-tyrants try to take over societies, there is always some flaw, some human impulse undoing the headlong rush toward a negative goal. There are always factions, or rogue lieutenants, in ordinary human history; there is always a miscalculation, or a blunder, or a security breach; or differences of opinion at the top. STRAIGHT LINE LOGIC 
This topic of Ancient Gods returning has popped up in the past two years. I wonder why. (As a Polytheist, I never thought They went away.)

I was about 10 yrs old when I was ‘involuntarily’ brought to an event with my mom, who volunteered through our church in conjunction with Moody Bible Institute, based out of the city we lived in.
I was introduced to a theologian who had an interesting book with him, which my mom informed him that I would be interested in.
He very politely took the time to let a little kid thumb through his Johns Hopkins bound study, and in approx 10 minutes I had determined that the basic foundation of OT doctrinal biblical conception was misunderstood. I further concluded that if a 10 year old me was able to rapidly determine this, he had to be able to do so along with much of the ancient linguist academic and theological community, which I realized was supported by the fact that he was in possession of the book in the first place, since it is long predates Judaism and entirely concerns ‘pagan’ gods.
That book was ‘Amorite names in the Mari texts’, which I later came to own as an adult – notably, my own copy had been marked ‘withdrawn’ from the private library of a closed Catholic Theological Institute in NY and from there, it had been transferred to the private library of the Catholic Washington Theological Union (also now closed.)
So.. As I noted as a little kid, a lot of Christian theologians of both Protestant and Catholic origin were aware of this book, at least for their own private use, which concerned naming structure in Amorite peoples a millenia before the first inkling of anything related to Judaism or its offshoots.
For you to even begin to understand the OT and its origins you have to understand the population we refer to today as Amorites / Amurru. You have to understand the class divisions and the ubiquity, along with the predation they wreak 0n settled civilizations, coupled with the opportunistic abuse they are subjected to by those with resources. Only then can you understand what the bible, written with an alphabetic text lifted from the subjugation of Byblos and Ugarit, actually concerns. Essentially, every society that the Amorites have gained control over has been destroyed, going back to the Sumerians.
As to YHW / YHWH, this is not and never has been the name of a particular god. You can literally be worshipping any entity from a god of pestilence to a Phoenician Baal, under this designation. This is an inaccurately recreated term that exists due to the requirement of vowel repopulation in the writing system adopted from the conquered Phoenicians.
This is an honorific or descriptor of a god and you find it used in conjunction with Yahwi/Yawi-El, Yahwi/Yawi-Dagan, Yahwi/Yawi-Baal, Yahwi/Yawi-An (Sumerian chief god) , Yahwi/Yawi-Ikrub (Jacob).. and others.
It simply transliterates as the ‘Deity Lives’.
This is similar to the Akkadian (east semitic) transcription of the word ‘prayer’ across various times and places, which variously transliterates as Garabi, Karabi, Karbi, Quarbi, Ikribu, and several other alternate terms.. but which all share the same root meaning.
If you are diligent in your reading of the old Johns Hopkins study, you would also have found the source of the ‘tribe’ of Moses, as ‘Lewi’ – ‘designated person’ which is take from Amorite pagan customs. it is not actually a tribe but a lucrative office that exists in the ancestral worship of all pagan gods. This same system exists for the ‘Cohen’ office which has an exact parallel in Kahan pre-Islamic Semitic ‘pagan’ worship.
The OT is in fact telling you many things, far more than I could take the time to cover here, but what it is telling you is something more concerning human nature and where it goes wrong when our tribal proclivity to engage in malice for gain and profit takes the forefront, which is the message of Jesus Christ.
There is a reason that only Christianity does away with primitive blood sacrifices that were also standard practice in the early cultic rituals, and there is a reason that we find early Amorite ‘Habazu’ (farm slave) as the only given name of the downtrodden and dispossessed as ‘civilization’ dawns on humanity.
So, while I was a weird 10 year old to read a 300 page study on the transliteration of a dead language in a long dead script, my suggestion would be, seek and ye shall find.
