SCOTT RITTER: Nuclear High Noon in Europe

Say the U.S. does a false flag nuclear detonation in Ukraine, just a small little bomb. How can the brain trust be sure that Russia will respond proportionately, say another small little bomb? How does the brain trust know that the Russian response won’t take out Washington or New York City? From Scott Ritter at consortiumnews.com:

On Monday, Oct. 17, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization kicked off Operation STEADFAST NOON, its annual exercise of its ability to wage nuclear conflict. Given that NATO’s nuclear umbrella extends exclusively over Europe, the indisputable fact is that STEADFAST NOON is nothing more than NATO training to wage nuclear war against Russia.

Nuclear war against Russia.

The reader should let that sink in for a moment.

Don’t worry, NATO spokesperson Oana Lungscu reassured the rest of the world, the purpose of STEADFAST NOON is to ensure that NATO’s nuclear war-fighting capability “remains safe and effective.” It is a “routine” exercise, not linked to any current world events. Moreover, no “real” nuclear weapons will be used — just “fake” ones.

Nothing to worry about here.

Enter Jens Stoltenberg, NATO secretary general, stage right in the nuclear theater. In a statement to the press on Oct. 11, Stoltenberg declared that, “Russia’s victory in the war against Ukraine will be a defeat of NATO,” before ominously announcing, “This cannot be allowed.”

To that end, Stoltenberg stated, the STEADFAST NOON nuclear drills would continue as scheduled. These drills, Stoltenberg said, were an important deterrence mechanism in the face of Russian “veiled: nuclear threats.”

Undermining Eastern Ukraine’s Electorate, by Declan Hayes

Any election whose results the U.S. and NATO don’t like is deemed per se rigged. From Declan Hayes at strategic-culture.org:

Germany and the European Union have the backs of anyone wishing to undermine the credibility of any elections that didn’t secure NATO’s imprimatur.

As Germany’s Foreign Office and the European Union both directly fund The European Platform for Democratic Elections (EPDE) and indirectly through the “13 independent European citizen election observation organizations” that are members of this shadowy group, Germany and the European Union have the backs of anyone wishing to undermine the credibility not only of the recent referenda held in Eastern Ukraine but those in Crimea and other elections that didn’t secure NATO’s imprimatur.

Because the EPDE is concerned that non NATO approved elections lack “integrity”, it preaches that problematic elections, including those internal to Russia, can only gain that stamp of approval by having EU approved monitors drawn from the EPDE and similar NATO front bodies. Thus, because it notes that “no international politically-biased observers [were] identified during the 2022 Russian regional elections”, it argues to its EU paymasters that those elections failed its litmus test that internal elections in Russia and allied states can only be kosher if held under the watchful eye of the EPDE and similar EU and NATO funded Big Brother groups.

Crucially, regarding its claims of independence, the EPDE posits “Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine” as being a primary factor in causing EPDE and other “experts” not to observe those Russian elections on behalf of NATO and other interested groups. The EPDE citing “Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Ukraine” is simply further proof the EPDE, whilst parading its independence, is, in fact just a blunt tool of EU and NATO soft power, whose mantra the EPDA parrots to the letter. The EPDA, in other words, very much has a dog in the fight, and that dog is NATO, which is its eyes as well as its ears.

Germany and EU have been handed over a declaration of war, by Pepe Escobar

The bombing of Nordstream 1 and 2 precludes any deal between Germany and Russia for Russian natural gas. It also makes Germany that much more dependent on the U.S. The U.S. is quite happy with those outcomes. From Pepe Escobar at thesaker.is:

The sabotage of the Nord Stream (NS) and Nord Stream 2 (NS2) pipelines in the Baltic Sea has ominously propelled ‘Disaster Capitalism’ to a whole new, toxic level.

This episode of Hybrid Industrial/Commercial War, in the form of a terror attack against energy infrastructure in international waters signals the absolute collapse of international law, drowned by a “our way or the highway”, “rules-based”, order.

The attack on both pipelines consisted of multiple explosive charges detonated in separate branches close to the Danish island of Bornholm, but in international waters.

That was a sophisticated operation, carried out in stealth in the shallow depth of the Danish straits. That would in principle rule out submarines (ships entering the Baltic are limited to a draught of 15 meters). As for prospective “invisible” vessels, these could only loiter around with permission from Copenhagen – as the waters around Borholm are crammed with sensors, reflecting fear of incursion by Russian submarines.

Swedish seismologists registered two underwater explosions on Monday – one of them estimated at 100 kg of TNT. Yet as much as 700 kg may have been used to blow up three separate pipeline nodes. Such amount could not have possibly been delivered in just one trip by underwater drones currently available in neighboring nations.

The pressure on the pipelines dropped exponentially. The pipes are now filled with seawater.

The pipes on both NS and NS2 can be repaired, of course, but hardly before the arrival of General Winter. The question is whether Gazprom – already focused on several hefty Eurasian customers –  would bother, especially considering that Gazprom vessels could be exposed to a possible NATO naval attack in the Baltic.

Chris Hedges: NATO — Most Dangerous Military Alliance on Planet

No sane person thinks pursuit of a neocon fantasy global empire is worth the risk of nuclear war. From Chris Hedges at consortiumnews.com:

At no time, including the Cuban missile crisis, have we stood closer to the precipice of nuclear war.

“Together We Are Wrong” — by Mr. Fish

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the arms industry that depends on it for billions in profits, has become the most aggressive and dangerous military alliance on the planet. Created in 1949 to thwart Soviet expansion into Eastern and Central Europe, it has evolved into a global war machine in Europe, the Middle East, Latin America Africa and Asia.

NATO expanded its footprint, violating promises to Moscow, once the Cold War ended, to incorporate 14 countries in Eastern and Central Europe into the alliance. It will soon add Finland and Sweden.

It bombed Bosnia, Serbia and Kosovo. It launched wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, resulting in close to a million deaths and some 38 million people driven from their homes.

It is building a military footprint in Africa and Asia. It invited Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea, the so-called Asia Pacific Four, to its recent summit in Madrid at the end of June. It has expanded its reach into the Southern Hemisphere, signing a military training partnership agreement with Colombia, in December 2021. It has backed Turkey, with NATO’s second largest military, which has illegally invaded and occupied parts of Syria as well as Iraq.

NATO: By Making China the Enemy, the Alliance Is Threatening World Peace, by Jonathan Cook

Remember the good old days when NATO was a defensive alliance against the Soviet Union? Now it’s a tool of U.S. wet dreams of global hegemony. From Jonathan Cook at antiwar.com:

As the saying goes, if you only have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. The West has the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a self-declared “defensive” military alliance – so any country that refuses its dictates must, by definition, be an offensive military threat.

That is part of the reason why NATO issued a new “strategic concept” document last week at its summit in Madrid, declaring for the first time that China poses a “systemic challenge” to the alliance, alongside a primary “threat” from Russia.

Beijing views this new designation as a decisive step by NATO on the path to pronouncing it a “threat” too – echoing the alliance’s escalatory approach towards Moscow over the past decade. In its previous mission statement, issued in 2010, NATO advocated “a true strategic partnership” with Russia.

According to a report in the New York Times, China would have found itself openly classed as a “threat” last week had it not been for Germany and France. They insisted that the more hostile terminology be watered down so as to avoid harming their trade and technology links with China.

Empire To Expand NATO In Response To War Caused By NATO Expansion, by Caitlin Johnstone

NATO hasn’t learned the schoolyard maxim: the best way to avoid fights is not to start them. From Caitlin Johnstone at caitlinjohnstone.com:

Turkey’s President Erdoğan has officially withdrawn Ankara’s objection to the addition of Finland and Sweden to NATO membership, with the three countries signing a trilateral memorandum at a NATO summit in Madrid.

The removal of Erdoğan’s objection was reportedly obtained via significant natsec concessions from the other two nations largely geared toward facilitating Turkey’s ongoing conflict with regional Kurdish factions, and it removes the final obstacle to Finland and Sweden beginning the process of becoming NATO members. Finland’s addition will more than double the size of NATO’s direct border with Russia, a major national security concern for Moscow.

“Sweden and Finland moved rapidly to apply to NATO in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, reversing decades of security policy and opening the door to the alliance’s ninth expansion since 1949,” Axios reports.

So the western empire will be expanding NATO again in response to a war that was predominantly caused by NATO expansion. Brilliant.

‘Not a Justification but a Provocation’: Chomsky on the Root Causes of the Russia-Ukraine War, by Ramzy Baroud

If one gets the full story of Ukraine, Russia, and NATO since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, it is not difficult to understand why Russia invaded Ukraine. From Ramzy Baroud at commondreams.org:

Chomsky believes that the main ‘background’ of this war, a factor that is missing in mainstream media coverage, is “NATO expansion.”

One of the reasons that Russian media has been completely blocked in the West, along with the unprecedented control and censorship over the Ukraine war narrative, is the fact that western governments simply do not want their public to know that the world is vastly changing.

Ignorance might be bliss, arguably in some situations, but not in this case. Here, ignorance can be catastrophic as western audiences are denied access to information about a critical situation that is affecting them in profound ways and will most certainly impact the world’s geopolitics for generations to come.

The growing inflation, an imminent global recession, a festering refugee crisis, a deepening food shortage crisis and much more are the kinds of challenges that require open and transparent discussions regarding the situation in Ukraine, the NATO-Russia rivalry and the responsibility of the West in the ongoing war.

To discuss these issues, along with the missing context of the Russia-Ukraine war, we spoke with Professor Noam Chomsky, believed to be the greatest living intellectual of our time.

Chomsky told us that it “should be clear that the (Russian) invasion of Ukraine has no (moral) justification.” He compared it to the US invasion of Iraq, seeing it as an example of “supreme international crime.” With this moral question settled, Chomsky believes that the main ‘background’ of this war, a factor that is missing in mainstream media coverage, is “NATO expansion.”

SCOTT RITTER: Turkey Rains on NATO’s Parade

Maybe Erdogan sees the downsides of continuing NATO expansion. From Scott Ritter at consortiumnews.com:

In opposing the application of Finland and Sweden, Erdogan has disrupted the military alliance’s effort to further provoke Russia with even more expansion.

Letters of application to NATO from Finland and Sweden, presented to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on May 18. (NATO)

On May 18, the secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a Norwegian named Jen Stoltenberg, stood on a stage, flanked by the ambassadors to NATO of Finland and Sweden, Klaus Korhonen and Axel Wernhoff, respectively.

It was one of those made-for-television moments that politicians dream of — a time of high drama, where the ostensible forces of good are faced off against the relentless assault of evil, which necessitates the intervention of like-minded friends and allies to help tip the scales of geopolitical justice toward those who embrace liberty over tyranny.

“This is a good day,” Jen Stoltenberg announced, “at a critical moment for our security.”

Left unsaid was the harsh reality that hundreds of miles to the east the military forces of Russia and Ukraine were locked in deadly combat on Ukrainian soil. Also left unsaid was the role played by NATO in facilitating that conflict.

Reckoning With Insanity, Part One, by Robert Gore

the-enlargement-of-nato-1949-2018_cropped_3x2

Finland and Sweden have asked to join

The time many people will have to grasp the insanity of the Russian situation may be measured in microseconds.

Part Two

What they fear the most is you, thinking for yourself. Within those three words are two implicit concepts. Thinking is the fundamental essential for human existence. It can be hard work, but nobody will disparage it on that basis. Attacks on thought, and there have been many, tend to be more subtle.

The for yourself is more problematic. For one thing, it sounds selfish. Nowadays you can present yourself as damn near any kind of humanitarian, even when you’re carrying all sorts of obviously hypocritical baggage, and you’ll go unchallenged. State that your first concern is your own welfare, not the common good or the public interest, and most people will mentally consign you to the ninth circle of hell. Sixty-five years after publication, Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand’s tribute to the self-interested mind, is still denounced. Soon it will be banned in those jurisdictions that have not already done so.

And who wants to be consigned to the ninth circle of hell? Think for yourself and worse, dare to speak your questions, speculations, hypotheses, and conclusions, and you open yourself to isolation and attack. The killer bees in the hive mind mind are viscous, relentless, and remorseless, inflicting stinging, sometimes deadly, cancellation. Then there’s that part of thinking many don’t like—the hard work. It’s easier to join the hive. Never underestimate laziness as a human motivation.

For those that do think for themselves, dispelling the smokescreen of obfuscation, propaganda, and lies that now constitute communications from politicians, other public officials, their allies, and their string-pullers has become routine, Citizens of totalitarian regimes know well the guiding precept: all such communications are lies unless conclusively demonstrated otherwise.

NATO’s War on Truth, by Declan Hayes

Enemies come and go but truth is the perpetual enemy of those who would wage war and tyrannize their own citizens. From Declan Hayes at strategic-culture.org:

I have a dream. I have a dream that freedom from NATO will ring from the Ural Mountains of Russia to the Bavarian Alps, from every hill and molehill of Ukraine and Poland,” Declan Hayes writes.

Lord Alfred Ponsonby‘s dictum that “When war is declared, truth is the first casualty”, remains as true today as it did when he wrote Falsehood in War-time, Containing an Assortment of Lies Circulated Throughout the Nations During the Great War, his 1928 classic. Although Snake Island, the Ghost of Kiev and a million other NATO lies over Ukraine could be wheeled out to show NATO is a serial liar, NATO has a much greater lie afoot.

That lie is that NATO is only at war with Russia (Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Palestine, Venezuela, Iran etc etc) and not also against all of us. Although Ireland has not yet joined NATO, we too must freeze in the dark, join Nazi mobs vandalizing Russian Embassies, throw our houses open to the unvaccinated wives, mistresses and pet dogs of Azov Nazis and sacrifice our own futures, just to spite “Putin” (and Assad and all of NATO’s many other scapegoats). A surprisingly large number of simpletons, goaded on by NATO’s media, buy into that poppycock.
