Blacks of Yesteryear and Today, by Walter E. Williams

Before the civil rights and welfare legislation of the 1960’s, most blacks grew up in two-parent families. From Walter E. Williams at lewrockwell.com:

I was a teenager, growing up in the Richard Allen housing project of North Philadelphia, when Emmett Till was lynched in Money, Mississippi, on Aug. 28, 1955, and his brutalized, unrecognizable body later recovered from the Tallahatchie River. From 1882-1968, 4,743 lynchings occurred in the United States. Roughly 73%, or 3,446, were black people, and 27%, or 1,297, were white people. Many whites were lynched because they were Republicans who supported their fellow black citizens and opposed the lawless act of lynching. Tuskegee University has the best documentation of lynching. It records an 1892 high of 69 whites and 161 blacks lynched. By the 1940s, occurrences of lynching fell to single digits or disappeared altogether.

At the time of my youth, today’s opportunities for socioeconomic advancement were nonexistent for black people. For all but a few, college attendance was out of the question because of finances and racial discrimination. If you were not admitted to the black colleges of Lincoln University or Cheyney State College, forget about college. I do not know of any student of my 1954 class at Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin High School who attended college. Though the quality of education at Benjamin Franklin is a mere shadow of its past, today roughly 17% of its graduating class has been admitted to college. The true hope for a youngster graduating from high school during the 1950s was a well-paying and steady job. My first well-paying job was as a taxi driver for Yellow Cab Company.

ELECTION: Rep. Waters says she won’t forgive ‘black young voters…who align themselves with Trump.’ By Sara Carter

Blacks have been voting Democratic for so long the party takes them for granted. Blacks have noticed. From Sara Carter at saracarter.com:

Rep. Maxine Waters told SiriusXM’s ‘The Joe Madison Show’ Friday that she would never forgive young black voters that consider voting for President Donald Trump.

Does she even realize that young black voters aren’t asking for her forgiveness or her permission. The nerve of Democratic politicians to think that they somehow own particular groups of people in America. It doesn’t matter that Waters, a California Democrat, is Black because what she is saying is insulting.

It’s not about the color of your skin, or how much or little money you make, it’s about your own individuality and right to choose what’s best for you. I don’t think young Black voters are tossing and turning at night over what Waters thinks is best for them or the choices that they make.

It’s sad that the Democratic Party can’t see the hypocrisy in their own actions. The way many Democratic leaders speak about the Black community, or for that matter any minority community, is plain wrong and un-American.

Let’s look at what Waters said. She said it was “shameful” that young black voters might consider casting a ballot for Trump.”

She said she was angry about “black young men who think somehow they can align themselves with Trump.”

But more and more young Black men are aligning themselves with Trump. Just look at the latest Rasmussen Reports that estimates roughly one-third of black voters will vote for Trump in the election.

“It just hurts me so bad to see blacks talking about supporting Trump. I don’t know why they would be doing it. I don’t know why it is on their minds,” she added.

“Time To Switch Hands” – Pro-Trump Candidate Kim Klacik Says Liberals Ruined Baltimore, by Tyler Durden

Kim Klacik leads a small band of brave black Republicans who are challenging Democrats in what have traditionally been Democratic urban strongholds. From Tyler Durden at zerohedge.com:

Baltimore congressional candidate Kimberly Klacik could be the next face of the Republican Party – and if she wins a Congressional seat on Nov. 3, it would be the first time in more than fifty years Republicans controlled Maryland’s 7th District.

Klacik’s popularity exploded after President Trump shared her campaign video on Twitter, which criticized the Democratic leadership of Baltimore City with a huge African American population (see: here & here). She even appeared at the Republican National Convention and made several television appearances, raising $6.5 million from Jul. 1 through Sept. 30.

Here’s the video Trump re-tweeted that pushed Klacik into the spotlight:

“…and black people don’t have to vote Democrat,” Klacik said in the short video.

Klacik is running for late Rep. Elijah Cummings’ old seat in a race against Rep. Kweisi Mfume. She routinely accuses Democrats in Baltimore of abandoning the black community. Most of her fame comes from videos of her speaking to the camera as she walks the poorest and most dangerous neighborhoods of the city, or maybe even the country, littered with abandoned homes, dormant factories, and opioid clinics.

The Civil Rights Movement Goes Into Reverse, by Robert Weissberg

Rewards without achievement ultimately destroys the recipients. From Robert Weissberg at unz.com:

No element of American culture is more axiomatic than the link between education and upward mobility. This relationship virtually defined the early civil rights movement but, as we shall see, not only has this link weakened, but the very opposite seems to be emerging —destroying education, especially public education, has, ostensibly, become the path to racial progress.

At least until the 1960s, the education and economic progress nexus was beyond dispute since the facts—blacks were shortchanged educationally and also lagged behind whites economically–were shockingly obvious. Civil rights organizations thus reasonably zeroed in on educational equality, and by the mid-1960s trillions were flowing into schools promoting racial uplift. There were free meals (“can’t learn on an empty stomach”) plus countless programs targeting “root causes” such as Head Start. A vast close-the-gap industry emerged, and every proposal seemed sure-fired. Recall the massively funded Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and President George Bush’s No Child Left Behind that mandated clear metrics for progress and incentives. Experts announced that black students could only learn from black teachers or that school textbooks needed more black faces and African American history. And on and on, endlessly but all had at least some reasonable relationship to boosting learning.

Now, over 60 years past initial efforts, it is clear that no elixir performs as advertised, regardless of ideological pedigree or how many trillions are “invested in the children” (the inflation adjusted spending on education since the 1960s has increased by 280%). Nor has the black/white gap in wealth narrowed since the late 1960s despite soaring educational spending. What is to be done? The answer: quackery, schemes that will only exacerbate an already troubling situation for black children. Putting the civil rights revolution into reverse, so to speak. This educational foolishness may well have been invented by the same egalitarian zealots who insist that the cure for black criminality requires abolishing the police. Let me offer just a sampling of this pernicious nonsense.

The most notorious of these misguided “leveling” policies is forcing schools to discipline students by racial quota—non-blacks are to be discipline at the same rates as blacks. This policy officially began in a 2014 “Dear Colleague” letter from President Obama’s Department of Education Office of Civil Rights Enforcement claiming that school districts that disproportionately suspended, expelled of otherwise penalize blacks pupils were in violation of federal anti-discrimination law, and thus risked losing federal funding. The principle of even-handedness was to be replaced by disparate impact, i.e., uncovering discrimination by the numbers.

Philadelphia Shows Riots Are the New Normal—and Could Force Out A President Biden, by James Kirkpatrick

A President Joe Biden doesn’t have the starch to deal with rioters, and the riots won’t stop if he’s elected. From James Kirkpatrick at unz.com:

Philadelphia was under curfew last night and Danielle Outlaw, the black lady police chief newly hired after her stellar performance in Portland OR, is breast-beating about her force’s need for more mental health social workers [Philadelphia pledges better response after shooting death of Walter Wallace Jr., 6ABC.com, October 29, 2020]. Of course, this is completely irrelevant to the beat cops’ urgent need to protect themselves from Walter Wallace Jr., the “aspiring rapper” who attacked them with a knife, and to the city’s imperative need to assert law and order—the absence of which most hurts decent blacks, as Thomas Sowell has pointed out—if necessary by ruthless coercion. Riots are the new normal for America if President Trump is not re-elected—and maybe if he is. But Joe Biden tepidly condemned the recent riots only after expressing “shock and grief” about “another Black life in America lost” [Biden, Harris Express ‘Shock and Grief’ Over Police Shooting of Walter Wallace Jr., by Brian X. McCrone, 10 Philadelphia, October 27, 2020].

This was a fairly straightforward incident of an armed criminal being put down by police. If even this causes riots that the authorities are too Politically Correct to stop, every interaction between police and blacks can turn into an inferno. It means this country is on a permanent war footing.

One of the bizarre undercurrents of the Black Lives Matter movement is how the “victims” seem to be declining in quality. George Floyd had a lengthy criminal record, held a gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach, and died from a drug overdose but at least the initial video (dishonestly presented by the MSM) portrayed him as sympathetic. Someone could at least say that regardless of a person’s criminal record or evasive behavior, police shouldn’t be allowed to act in a certain way.

Then there was Jacob Blake, who was shot by police after his girlfriend called in a domestic violence dispute. He broke away from officers and reached into a car, something that would get just about anyone shot. Nonetheless, because he was at least shot in the back, Democrat vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris could meet with the family for what Ben Crump called an “inspiring and uplifting visit” [Kamala Harris meets with Jacob Blake’s family in Wisconsin, by Jason Silverstein, CBS News, September 8, 2020].

The “Wokeness” Wars Coming to Your Town, by Philip Giraldi

Wokesters lurk everywhere, and they want to make sure you and your kids are indoctrinated, whether you like it or not. From Philip Giraldi at unz.com:

Kurt Vonnegut’s 1961 dystopian short story “Harrison Bergeron” describes a 2081 America in which the 211th, 212th, and 213th amendments to the Constitution of the United States have together mandated that all Americans must be made completely equal. No one is allowed to be more intelligent or handsome or more physically capable than anyone else. The standards are enforced by a Handicapper General, an elderly woman named Diana Moon Glampers armed with a shotgun, who mandates the wearing of disfiguring masks for those who are thought to be too beautiful while tiny radios are mounted inside the ears of intelligent people, programmed to go off at intervals and disrupt any thoughts. Those who are stronger or faster than others are required to wear heavy weights around their wrists and ankles.

Somehow, the Vonnegut story comes to mind at the present time, particularly in my home county here in Virginia. Loudoun County, a suburb of Washington D.C. where all that fiat money is printed, is the wealthiest in the United States based on per capita income. When I moved here twenty-three years ago, it was solidly Republican, but now it is controlled by the Democrats, largely due to the influx of out of state newcomers moving in to take the thousands of new federal jobs in the burgeoning Global War On Terror. When in power, the Republicans foolishly had allowed their business cronies to build large and ugly commuter housing developments that eventually changed the political power alignment when the liberal newcomers inevitably outnumbered the relatively conservative locals.

Black Appraisals of Black Lives Matter – Part II, by Soeren Kern (with link to Part I)

Perhaps the most egregious denigration of blacks in America today comes from those who think that blacks are a monolith, and only think one way, particularly about matters of race. Many blacks are quite skeptical of and even hostile to Black Lives Matter and its agenda. From Soeren Kern at gatestoneinstitute.org:

  • “BLM are basically, in my opinion, profiteers. They are profiting on trying to give a narrative, a false narrative, that is: ‘white racist cops are destroying the black community.’ No BLM presence walking through Chicago protesting black-on-black crime. You know why? Because it is not profitable. There is no money to be made.” — Leo Terrell, civil rights attorney and lifelong Democrat.
  • “Black Lives Matter does not support the critical civil rights issue of this day… educational freedom. How many young black kids are relegated to failing public schools in failing neighborhoods? Where does BLM stand on that issue? They stand with the progressive socialist left and the teachers unions. Ask yourself, has BLM ever condemned the action of Barack Obama in April 2009 to cancel the DC school voucher program?” — Allen West, former U.S. Congressman for Florida and retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel.
  • “The dubious goal of the politics of racial grievance exploited by BLM and others is to finance their causes. Thus, in order to advance their agendas, they have to come up with a negative narrative regardless of its veracity. The story must pull on the heartstrings of blacks to ensure solidarity and of whites to keep them feeling guilty and compliant. Hence, the false narrative that ‘Blacks are being gunned down by white cops’ excites those who have been conditioned to accept the claim regardless of its factual accuracy.” — Dr. Eric Wallace, President of the Freedom’s Journal Institute for the Study of Faith and Public Policy.
  • “We now find ourselves in a place that I feel is the antithesis of the Civil Rights Movement. Instead of marching toward a world that deemphasizes the importance of skin color, we instead find ourselves pursuing a world where skin color is placed firmly and proudly at the forefront of identity, where Martin Luther King’s idea of judging people by the content of their character takes a decided backseat to a person’s ancestry…. a world where white people must apologize and atone for sins that they never committed and black people claim victimhood for horrors that they never experienced…. It is the exact thing the Civil Rights Movement aimed to defeat. — Leonydus Johnson, actor.
  • “Racism as a factor has never been more insignificant in American life…. you know who knows that? Barack Obama. Because when Barack Obama gives a commencement address at Howard University, he says that if you could be born at any time, anywhere, he said that it would be here and now. And this is a guy whose last name is Obama, born in Hawaii, middle name Hussein, knocks off Hillary Clinton and beats John McCain. And he believes racism is a major problem in America? Nonsense….” — Larry Elder, radio talk show host and bestselling author.
  • “The most important thing is helping people realize to how important their own attitudes are. I would argue that a person’s attitudes are more important than race, gender, social class in determining whether or not they are going to be successful.” — Dr. Carol M. Swain, former professor of political science and law at Vanderbilt University.
“Black Lives Matter does not support the critical civil rights issue of this day… educational freedom. How many young black kids are relegated to failing public schools in failing neighborhoods? Where does BLM stand on that issue? They stand with the progressive socialist left and the teachers unions.” — Allen West, former U.S. Congressman for Florida and retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel. (Photo by Kevin Hagen/Getty Images)

This multi-part series (Part I here) focuses on the perspectives of blacks — conservative, liberal or libertarian — who appraise Black Lives Matter and its agenda. The following selection of commentary by blacks from all walks of life — actors, athletes, businesspeople, civil rights activists, clergy, commentators, physicians and politicians — demonstrates that black public opinion is not monolithic, and that BLM does not speak for all African Americans.

Will California Restore Affirmative Action? Probably not, by Ron Unz

Repealing affirmative action in California may not be the slam dunk people think. From Ron Unz at unz.com:

As everyone knows, over the last couple of decades California has become a one-party Democratic state. Democrats hold a better than three-fourths hyper-majority in the State Assembly and their control is nearly as overwhelming in the State Senate. California has our nation’s largest Congressional delegation, and of its 53 members only seven are Republican.

Not only is every statewide officeholder a Democrat, but no Republican has won such a race in almost 15 years, with many of the recent contests not even featuring a Republican on the November ballot. The once-proud Republican Party of Reagan and Nixon has been reduced to almost total irrelevance.

This same pattern has held in national elections, with Donald Trump losing the 2016 California vote by a remarkable 30 points and the most recent polling data suggesting a similar outcome this November.

Except for tiny Hawaii, California is now America’s most heavily non-white state, with our white European population reduced to little more than 30% of the total. But such demographic factors explain only part of those lop-sided 2016 election results since white Californians supported Trump at a rate 20-25 points lower than whites in the rest of the country. If America’s entire white national electorate had voted like its Golden State counterpart, Trump would have lost all fifty states, mostly by huge landslides, and suffered by far the greatest electoral disaster in American history. All the Trump-hating pundits would have spent Election Night laughing and saying “I told you so!”

Revolution 2020, by Angelo Codevilla

If you’re looking for clarification, and clarity, about the incredibly confused state of the US, this article is for you. It’s long, but well worth the read. From Angelo Codevilla at americanmind.org:

How did we get here—and how will it end?

Understanding what drives the revolution that is destroying the American republic gives insight into how the 2020 election’s results may impact its course. Its practical question—who rules?—is historically familiar. But any revolution’s quarrels and stakes obscure the question: to what end? Our revolution is by the ruling class—a revolution from above. Crushing obstacles to its growing oligarchic rule is the proximate purpose.

But the logic that drives the revolution aims at civilization itself.

What follows describes how far along its path that logic has taken America, and where it might take us in the future depending on the election’s outcome.

Regime Change

Aristotle, in Book 5 of the Politics, describes how revolutions kill regimes (such as America’s) that balance the contrasting interests of ordinary people with those of the wealthy, of officials, and of other prominent persons. As the balance between any complex regime’s components shifts over time, the system may seamlessly transform into unmixed democracy, oligarchy, or some kind of monarchy. The revolution may be barely perceptible—providing that those who impose themselves, whether from above or below, do so without adding insult to injury.

But, if the party that takes power thereby destroys the friendship that had bound the several parts, even trifling incidents can spiral into all-consuming violence. Thucydides’ account of the revolution that destroyed Corcyra during the Peloponnesian War is prototypical. The French revolution, the Spanish civil war, and countless others echo it. Today, the oligarchic transformation of America’s republic is turning violent. Aristotle, however, points out that oligarchies born of violent revolution tend to succumb to the very violence that births them, quickly degenerating into some kind of tyranny or one-man rule. Restoration of anything like the original constitutional regime is most unlikely.

Self-Defense and ‘Taking the Law into Your Own Hands.’ By Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr.

Is there a free market alternative to the protection, or lack thereof, offered by today’s police departments? From Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr. at lewrockwell.com:

The riots in Louisville are only the latest in a long string of violent, raging mob riots by the criminal Marxist BLM movement, their mostly-white “antifa” thuggish allies, and assorted looters. In this case, “Two police officers have been shot in Louisville, Ky., amid riots following the announcement of an indictment in the shooting of Breonna Taylor. Louisville chief of police Robert Schroeder confirmed that the officers were shot and were taken to a local hospital. Schroeder told reporters that one of the officers was undergoing surgery but in stable condition, while the other was alert and stable. Police have arrested one suspect in the shooting. . . after a grand jury charged just one of the officers involved in the shooting of Taylor in a botched drug bust. Rioters clashed with police throughout Louisville, burning trash cans and calling to defund the city police department.”

Last May, hundreds of businesses in the state’s Twin Cities — Minneapolis and St. Paul — were damaged or looted during four days of unrest. In Los Angeles, “National Guard troops arrived in the nation’s second-largest city overnight after a fourth day of protests Saturday saw demonstrators clash repeatedly with officers, torch police vehicles and pillage businesses. Mayor Eric Garcetti said he asked Gov. Gavin Newsom for 500 to 700 members of the Guard to assist the 10,000 Los Angeles Police Department officers. The California National Guard is being deployed to Los Angeles overnight to support our local response to maintain peace and safety on the streets of our city,’ said the mayor, who ordered a rare citywide curfew until Sunday morning. Firefighters responded to dozens of fires, and scores of businesses were damaged. One of the hardest-hit areas was the area around the Grove, a popular high-end outdoor mall west of downtown where hundreds of protesters swarmed the area, showering police with rocks and other objects and vandalizing shops. About 3,000 protesters demonstrated in Brooklyn, and were pushed back by NYPD officers releasing chemical mace after the protests turned violent. A woman was arrested and charged with attempted murder after she threw a Molotov cocktail into an occupied police car.
