Feeding LA’s Homeless Industrial Complex, by MN Gordon

As with most government programs ostensibly intended to help people, LA’s homelessness programs help the helpers far more than the helped. From MN Gordon at economicprism.com:

Election season 2022 is in full bloom.  Activists, with clipboards and ballot initiatives, are abundantly flowering outside supermarkets.  They want signatures – your signature – in support of new legislation that would increase funding for various whacky and zany ideas.

In California, and particularly in Los Angeles, initiatives that would fire off more dollars to combat the abundance of shanty favelas blighting urban areas are flourishing.  The rationale is compelling…

As of 2020, there were over 161,000 homeless people in California.  In Los Angeles County alone, the homeless population, as of 2020, was precisely 66,463.  Both those counts are now likely much higher.

Who doesn’t want to do something about the profusion of tented bivouacs, barrel fires, medieval disease, human excrement, public drug use, crime, and mental illness that is running rampant across the southland?

Surely something must be done.  But what?

Can’t have visitors to LA for the Super Bowl thinking the city is a mecca for homeless people who live in horrific conditions on the streets. In other words, can’t have visitors seeing the truth with their own eyes. From MN Gordon at economicprism.com:

The sun always shines bright over the Golden State.  Even in January.  But, beneath the sunshine, darkness rages in the land of fruits and nuts.

For example, State Senator Scott Wiener – a monster – recently introduced a bill that would permit children 12 and older to be vaccinated against COVID-19 without their parent’s knowledge or consent.  According to Wiener, this bill is consistent with current state law that allows teens to have abortions and obtain birth control without telling their parents.

Yet Wiener’s bill may be finished.  Because his cohort, State Senator Dick Pan, has introduced a bill that would require all children to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend K-12 schools regardless of personal beliefs.  Not vaccination?  Then no school.

Perhaps, this is for the best.  Getting kicked out of school at this late stage in the decline and fall of western civilization is a major blessing.  What kid deserves an institutional education from freaks and rejects?

Before we pulled our son out of the local Long Beach public high school, he was learning history from someone that went by Mx.  Apparently, the teacher – a dude with a green beard – was uncertain if he was male or female.  So he used Mx. instead of Mr. or Ms.

Canada plans to punish hate speech pre-crime

If passed, a bill in the Canadian legislature will punish online or in-person “hate speech” with a fine up to C$20,000 (about $16,000 USD) if it targets a specific person.

The law states that “hate speech means the content of a communication that expresses detestation or vilification of an individual or group of individuals on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.”

Nice and vague, just the way they like it.

The law also allows the courts to intervene if a person fears they will be the target of a hatred motivated offense.

So basically it’s like pre-crime. If a potential victim feels that you might hate them, they can apply for what is essentially a restraining order. What’s more, the judge can demand that you surrender weapons, wear a GPS monitor, remain under house arrest, abstain from alcohol, and submit to drug tests.

This is all without being charged, let alone convicted, of any crime.

And anyone who does does not follow the orders faces a year in prison.

California city says “add lemon juice” to dirty water

Because of the drought conditions in California, the water in Sacramento (the state’s capital) is tasting a little earthy.

The city says this is because there’s a higher concentration of geosmin is found in the water due to the drought-induced low water levels.

Geosmin tastes like dirt.

“Enough Is Enough”: Los Angeles Sheriff Urges State Of Emergency On Homelessness, by Jamie Joseph

Homelessness is pervasive in Los Angeles and local government has demonstrated no ability to deal with it. From Jamie Joseph at The Epoch Times via zerohedge.com:

In an unusual move, Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva has sent a letter to the Board of Supervisors urging them to declare a local state of emergency to address the spiraling homelessness crisis in the county, citing an increase in crime, lack of sanitation, and struggling businesses.

“We’ve been inundated with calls, with concerns, with images from the news, from people picking up the phone, emailing, sending us letters, about what’s going on in Venice,” Villanueva told reporters during a press conference inside the Justice Hall on June 23. “And that is a microcosm of what’s going on throughout the entire county of Los Angeles.”

“Enough is enough, we need to kick this into high gear,” he said.

There’s an estimated 200 homeless people on the Venice Beach Boardwalk and 2,000 throughout the neighborhood, making it the second largest concentration of homeless people after Skid Row in downtown Los Angeles. The area has been getting primary attention recently from Villanueva and the sheriffs’ Homeless Outreach and Services Team (HOST).

City On Fire: Over Half Of LA County Blazes Caused by Homeless, by Jamie Joseph

Los Angeles is set ablaze up to 24 times a day. The cause? Thousands of homeless encampments…

This year, fires started in homeless encampments have accounted for 54 percent of the blazes battled by the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), according to officials—a sharp uptick compared to 2020.

As the county grapples with more than 66,000 people living on its streets, critics are pointing to the growing number of fires caused by the homeless as another indication that officials are mishandling the crisis. And in parts of the city where the homeless are concentrated, residents and business owners say their concerns are not being heard.

LAFD Capt. Erik Scott told The Epoch Times that potential hazards in encampments come from warming and cooking fires, particularly on cold nights.

“One of our concerns is fires in tents where people experiencing homelessness are sleeping—where they could be injured or even die—and fires that start against a building and spread into the structure,” Scott said.

“Flames from those fires can spread into the brush in wildland areas, or to nearby buildings in urban areas or inside vacant buildings.”

He said potential fire hazards increase significantly on windy days, when the flames can spread rapidly.

“Using open flame to cook in any enclosed spaces, especially tight quarters like tents, can easily catch the tent or belongings inside on fire,” said Scott. In addition, toxic smoke gases can asphyxiate the tent’s occupants, knocking them out or killing them.

LAFD Fire Chief Ralph M. Terrazas recently walked through the Skid Row area in downtown L.A. with representatives from nearby business districts to discuss their concerns about encampments.

People going hungry = Record high stock prices, by Simon Black

How can the stock market be at record high when the economy sucks? Hint: think about central banks and fiat debt instruments. From Simon Black at sovereignman.com:

New York City is up 33% this year. St. Louis is up 66%. In Oregon it’s up 100%.

I’m not talking about real estate prices, local budget gaps, or even property tax rates.

These are the startling increases in the number of people across the country, and the world, who are in need of food.

Food banks across the Land of the Free are experiencing an enormous surge in demand from people looking to feed their families, many of whom are experiencing such economic hardship for the first time.

The director of a local food bank in western Massachusetts, for example, recently said, “I thought I had seen the worst during the Great Recession [of 2008-2009]. But what we have experienced since March due to COVID-19 has really overwhelmed us.”

I saw a video last week showing thousands of cars “stretching as far as the eye can see” in line to receive free food from a local food bank in my hometown of Dallas, Texas.

Similarly, Miami had a “massive food bank line stretched for two miles.”

You can see the same thing in big cities like New York and LA, to quieter towns like Erie, Pennsylvania, and across the world.

In the small county of Dorset in southwestern England, food banks have handed out an astonishing 1.2 million meals over the past few months, shattering all previous records. And local officials say that was just the tip of the iceberg.

It’s obvious there are millions upon millions of people who are suffering immeasurably because of Covid lockdowns.

German author Franz Kafka wrote in The Metamorphosis, “There is an infinite amount of hope in the universe … but not for us.” The legendary writer might as well have been writing about the state of California, a progressive wasteland that is the personification of everything wrong with leftist orthodoxy. In the mid-19th century, when it became a state, tens of thousands of people headed west. Today, those with a modicum of judgment and respect for their pocketbook are heading anywhere that is not named California, attempting to flee the incompetent mismanagement of Governor Gavin Newsom and his Democratic friends in Sacramento on every subject, from the economy to civil liberties.

The Exodus: A Primer

California may be the most populous state in the Union, but it could transform into the exodus capital of America. The Golden State has witnessed its population stall, declining slightly from 39.96 million to 39.78 million in the second half of 2019, according to the Department of Finance.

Growth has slowed close to zero or even declined in most coastal counties. The San Francisco Bay Area advanced, and counties east of Los Angeles witnessed modest growth. However, Los Angeles County shed residents for the second consecutive year in 2019. It is unclear how severe the population drop is in the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic and the state government’s proposed tax hikes.

Contrary to internet mythos, it is not only high-income earners who are packing up their things and saying goodbye to Newsom. Studies, including one from the Public Policy Institute of California and another by the Empire Center for Public Policy, have found that poorer households are more likely to flee than their affluent counterparts. But considering the policing being proposed or enacted, it is safe to say that the wealthy have no reason to be some of the left-behinds.

How the Homeless Crisis Could Soon Become an Epidemic, by Doug Casey

Many of the currently homeless were once members of the middle class who ran into hard times during the 2008-2009 financial crisis or its aftermath. From Doug Casey at internationalman.com:

International Man: There is a growing homeless crisis in liberal West Coast cities, including San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and many others. People living on the street are overrunning these cities.

Residents must deal with human feces, syringes, disease, and filth every day. In some areas, it’s worse than the dirtiest slums of Brazil, Kenya, and India.

How did this happen?

Doug Casey: Well, taking a long-term view, I see it as part of the continuing decline of Western civilization.

The West has always been distinguished relative to the rest of the world by its order, its cleanliness, its respect for property rights. These things are all going by the wayside. We were a middle class society with “bourgeois” values, essentially Boy Scout virtues. But these things are now held in contempt, even while the middle class is being squeezed. “Ground between the millstones of taxation and inflation,” as the phrase attributed to Lenin puts it.

Democrats have turned California into a problem-plagued burning nightmare, by Victor Davis Hanson

California is falling apart and there’s no conceivable way the collapse can be blamed on Republicans. From Victor Davis Hansonat foxnews.com:

More than 2 million Californians were recently left without power after the state’s largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric — which filed for bankruptcy earlier this year — preemptively shut down transmission lines in fear that they might spark fires during periods of high autumn winds.

Consumers blame the state for not cleaning up dead trees and brush, along with the utility companies for not updating their ossified equipment. The power companies in turn fault the state for so over-regulating utilities that they had no resources to modernize their grids.

Californians know that having tens of thousands of homeless in their major cities is untenable. In some places, municipal sidewalks have become open sewers of garbage, used needles, rodents and infectious diseases. Yet no one dares question progressive orthodoxy by enforcing drug and vagrancy laws, moving the homeless out of cities to suburban or rural facilities, or increasing the number of mental hospitals.

California’s Governor Blames Texas for California’s Policies That Caused the Homeless Crisis, by Mac Slavo

Yes, and the reason stupid kids get bad grades is because there are smart kids in the class. From Mac Slavo at shtfplan.com:

California’s authoritarian governor, Gavin Newsom, blamed the state of Texas for California’s homeless crisis. Rather than put the blame directly on the policies California has instituted that stifle free enterprise and punish heavily those who produce, Newsom said it’s the fault of Texas.

Newsom said many homeless people on the streets of San Francisco are from Texas. in an attempt to shift the blame from himself and the polices of socialists (who get rich peddling socialism to the masses as everyone else becomes impoverished.)

Former California assemblyman turned Texas resident Chuck DeVore reacted to Newsom pushing the blame onto others. The vice president of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, Chuck DeVore, said Wednesday that Gavin Newsom is “responsible for the policies that have created California’s homeless crisis,” in the wake of the governor blaming Texas for San Francisco’s homeless crisis. “What you’re seeing here are the words of a desperate man that we should almost feel sorry for,” DeVore, who served as a California assemblyman for six years, told “Fox & Friends.”

“Governor Gavin Newsom has been in office now for 22 straight years, starting at the San Francisco board of supervisors,” DeVore added. Homelessness has been rampant across the state of California in the past few years and merchants and homeowners have become increasingly vocal and incredibly irate at how things are going in the socialist dystopia.
