The Sudden Dominance of the Diversity Industrial Complex, by Thomas Hackett

Ten years ago nobody knew what a diversity officer was. Nowadays no institution of any size can function without a team of them. From Thomas Hackett at realclearwire.com

Little more than a decade ago, DEI was just another arcane acronym, a clustering of three ideas, each to be weighed and evaluated against other societal values. The terms diversity, equity, and inclusion weren’t yet being used in the singular, as one all-inclusive, non-negotiable moral imperative. Nor had they coalesced into a bureaucratic juggernaut running roughshod over every aspect of national life.

They are now.

Seemingly in unison, and with almost no debate, nearly every major American institution – including federal, state, and local governments, universities and public schools, hospitals, insurance, media and technology companies and major retail brands – has agreed that the DEI infrastructure is essential to the nation’s proper functioning. From Amazon to Walmart, most major corporations have created and staffed DEI offices within their human resources bureaucracy. So have sanitation departments, police departments, physics departments, and the departments of agriculture, commerce, defense, education and energy. Organizations that once argued against DEI now feel compelled to institute DEI training and hire DEI officers. So have organizations that are already richly diverse, such as the National Basketball Association and the National Football League.

Many of these offices in turn work with a sprawling network of DEI consulting firms, training outfits, trade organizations and accrediting associations that support their efforts.

Enter the CSO, by Eric Peters

Corporations are filling up with all sorts of executives who don’t make the corporation a dime. From Eric Peters at ericpetersautos.com:

Is it coincidence that the decline – and impending fall – of the car industry correlates with the  rise and proliferation of such things as chief sustainability officers?

Rivian – the electric truck maker that has so far only made a small handful of them and will never sell many of them because there are only so many people who can afford to spend $70,000 on a vehicle – has just named its very first CSO, Anisa Kamadoli Costa. She is a long way from Zora Arkus Duntov or John Z. Delorean, engineers and makers of cars.

But not from the World Economic Forum (WEF) where she “served” – interesting term, given the context – on the Global Future Council on Human Rights. Her degree is in International Economic Policy and she has been acclaimed “one of twelve forward thinkers at the intersection of sustainability and style by Marie Claire magazine. Her prior-to-Rivian gig was at the Tiffany & Co. Foundation, where she “drove the company’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) agenda.”

The New Model Army, by William Gudal

Given what our army has become, it’s probably a good idea we don’t try to save Ukraine with U.S. boots on the ground. From SLL reader William Gudal:

(With Apologies to Oliver Cromwell)

O.K., here is how I picture the next war being fought, and I mean a real war where people are drafted, not volunteered. This of course includes women too, now that all are equal, and the women will of course be included in the front line combat assaults. Trannies too. Trannies may seek their own separate tran-only units but will be denied as exclusionists. Celebrities? Of course, celebrities go this time. This will be the most diverse and inclusive fighting units ever.

This time there will be the strictest diversity requirements. In the U.S. Army a squad consists of 12 what shall we call them, “persons”. In our New Model Army the pre-combat unit photograph will look like the following: one Jew, one Asian, one transgender, one gay “man”, one gay “woman”, one “special needs” teenager, one African American, one indigenous person, one Hispanic, and (ugh!) one token Caucasian. Each such squad will of course have two extremely important non-combat officers assigned to it: a diversity officer and an assistant diversity officer. Part of their job description is to meet with their enemy counterparts to coordinate global compatibility and post war unification.

DEI and Sports, by Larry Beane

Woke ideology doesn’t work too well in sports. From Larry Beane at lewrockwell.com:

One of the interesting things about hitting the treadmill in the gym is the bank of televisions with closed captioning.  Since I don’t watch the boob tube, I’m not only exercising the body, but getting a glimpse into the alien world of the popular culture.  Sometimes the juxtapositions are telling.

On one channel was an international soccer game between Belgium and Finland.  Another channel had a talk show that was addressing the controversy about biological men competing in women’s sports – in this case, a male powerlifter who is being permitted into competition in the women’s division in the Olympic games.

The token black lady on the panel was yammering on and on about the buzzwords “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.”  For the reader of the future – perhaps landing here by means of a Google search – this is a fad of our present day based on the concept known as Critical Theory – which is basically the denigration of one intersection of demographic traits for the supposed benefit of others.  The au courant acceptable hatred in this, the Year of our Lord 2021, pertains to racially being white, sexually being heterosexual and not inventing a pretend sexual identity for oneself (in other words, just being a normal man, woman, boy, or girl), politically conservative, and religiously Christian.  One is also considered to be akin to the lepers in biblical times if one is not handicapped physically or mentally.

If one has all of these markers, it is socially and legally acceptable to treat such persons as the Untouchables in the caste system in India.  And the fewer of these characteristics one has, the greater the worth of that individual.  If you read about “apartheid” in 20th century South Africa, it’s a similar concept, only with the “bottom rail on top” as the old saying goes.

Canada public health wants children in solitary confinement, by Simon Black

Simon Black’s weekly chronicle of the absurd. From Black at sovereignman.com:

Are you ready for this week’s absurdity? Here’s our Friday roll-up of the most ridiculous stories from around the world that are threats to your liberty, risks to your prosperity… and on occasion, inspiring poetic justice.

White People Shouldn’t Translate Black Poetry

Amanda Gorman— a poet who happens to be Black— rose to notoriety after speaking at President Biden’s inauguration.

She is publishing a book of poetry, which will be translated into Dutch.

Gorman chose a female Dutch author to translate her work, but a Dutch activist journalist had other plans.

She rallied the woke mobsters to express their disgust that a White woman would be translating the work of a Black poet.

After the backlash, the white translator pulled out and decided she will not translate the book of poetry.

Apparently to be woke, we have to segregate poetry.

Canada Demands Solitary Confinement for Kids Exposed to Covid

A regional health department in Canada issued guidelines telling parents what to do if their child has been exposed to a classmate with Covid-19.

Health officials recommend that children be kept in solitary confinement for two weeks without contact with family members. These children should be forced to eat separately from the rest of the family, and wear a mask when they leave their bedroom jail cell.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Nonsense, by Walter E. Williams

Short women with no talent for basketball are underrepresented in the NBA. Should we be concerned? From Walter E. Williams at lewrockwell.com:

Check out any professional and most college basketball teams. Their starting five, and most of their other 10 players, are black, as is 80% of the NBA. This does not come anywhere close to the diversity and inclusion sought by the nation’s social justice warriors. Both professional and college coaches have ignored and threw any pretense of seeking diversity and inclusiveness. My question to you is: Would a basketball team be improved if coaches were required to include ethnically diverse players for the sake of equity? I have no idea of what your answer might be but mine would be: “The hell with diversity, equity and inclusion. I am going to recruit the best players and do not care if most of them turn out to be black players.” Another question: Do you think that any diversity-crazed college president would chastise his basketball coach for lack of diversity and inclusiveness?

Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (National Accelerator Laboratory) is home to the world’s most powerful experiments, fastest supercomputers and top-notch physics researchers. Much of SLAC’s research is on particle accelerators that are complicated machines that are designed, engineered and operated to produce high-quality particle beams and develop clues to the fundamental structure of matter and the forces between subatomic particles. You can bet that their personnel makeup exhibits very little concern about racial diversity, equity and inclusion. The bulk of their scientists is not only Americans of European and Asian ancestry but mostly men. My question to you is: What would you do to make SLAC more illustrative of the racial, ethnic and sexual diversity of America? As for me, my answer would be the same one that I gave in the basketball example: I am going to recruit the brightest scientists and I do not care if most of them turn out to be men of European and Asian ancestry.

History Lesson, by James Howard Kunstler

White liberal “progressives” have done American blacks more harm than good. From James Howard Kunstler at kunstler.com:

Now I am going to tell you why BLM is a hustle, and how it came to this. Here is an opening to that honest conversation about race everyone’s been pretending to ask for. That’s been a hustle too, so far, because when anybody actually ventures to launch it, the cries of “racist” shut it down.

The BLM hustle has turned into a violent insurrection supported by a body of bad ideas geared to driving the nation insane. The action on-the-ground is like the Jacobin phase of the French Revolution seasoned with the murderous derangement of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution. As biologist Bret Weinstein said in his podcast last week with linguistics prof John McWhorter: “If you attempt a Maoist takeover of the US, you’ll get a civil war.”

What we’re seeing in the looting and burning, the “canceling” of careers and lives, the toppling of statues and the attempt to rewrite history, the pathetic obeisance of political leaders to raging mobs, and the lives lost in senseless acts of violence is the unfinished business of the civil rights movement. That business was the full participation of Black citizens in American life. The main grievance now is that Black Americans are still denied full participation due to “systemic racism.” That’s a dodge. What actually happened is that Black America opted out and lost itself in a quandary of its own making with the assistance of their white dis-enablers, the well-intentioned “progressives.”

Apparently all white males are just mindless automatons, by Simon Black

As mindless automatons, we white males are fungible, and anyone could produce this blog and the books advertised on the home page. From Simon Black at sovereignman.com:

Recently the prominent investment bank Goldman Sachs announced that they would no longer work with companies whose Boards of Directors consisted exclusively of white males.

Specifically the bank will immediately require prospective clients to have at least one female or one non-white individual, on the Board of Directors. And by 2021, a company would need at least two ‘diverse’ directors, otherwise Goldman Sachs will refuse to underwrite that company’s Initial Public Offering.

(Obviously this doesn’t apply to Chinese or Middle Eastern companies; Goldman Sachs is happy to continue selling its soul to non-diverse companies in those parts of the world.)

But Goldman is just the latest bank to make this announcement.

Diversity and Inclusion Insanity, by Walter E. Williams

Diversity and inclusion are two unwarranted justification for still more government intrusion into our lives and curtailment of our freedom. From Walter E. Williams at lewrockwell.com:

It’s nearly impossible to have even a short conversation with a college administrator, politician or chief executive without the words diversity and inclusion dropping from their lips. Diversity and inclusion appear to be the end-all and be-all of their existence. So, I thought I’d begin this discussion by first looking up the definition of diversity.

According to the Oxford Dictionary, diversity is “the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc.” The definition gratuitously adds, “equality and diversity should be supported for their own sake.” The standard definition given for inclusion is involvement and empowerment where the inherent worth and dignity of all people are recognized.

Here’s my question to those who are wedded to diversity and inclusion: Are people better off the less they have in common with one another? For example, women are less likely to be able to march 12.4 miles in five hours with an 83-pound assault load. They are also less likely to be able to crawl, sprint, negotiate obstacles and move a wounded comrade weighing 165 pounds while carrying that load. Would anyone argue that a military outfit would benefit from diversity by including soldiers who can and those who cannot march 12 miles in five hours while carrying an 83-pound load?

Speaking of Manners, by Taki

The term “good breeding” is now undoubtedly politically incorrect, but it used to refer to people who had good manners. That’s not to imply good manners cannot be self-taught, in some cases they are. Unfortunately, good manners are becoming increasingly rare. From Taki at takimag.com:

Sometime during the 1920s, at an exclusive party at Count Boni de Castelanne’s, a great French lady felt herself beginning to die at the dinner table. “Quick, bring the dessert,” she whispered to the waiter.

She was not overcome by greed. She simply wished to hurry dinner along so as not to drop dead before the party rose from the table. In other words, she did not wish to cause discomfort to those present. Needless to say, the lady had impeccable manners.

Now, please don’t get me wrong. I do not expect anyone nowadays to avoid leaving a room when feeling unwell in order to not cause discomfort for the rest. I simply brought up a true story to illustrate how far our mores and manners have fallen these past 100 years. Back then, a grand lady dropping dead would have caused somewhat of a scandal. The hostess of the dinner would have become associated with the death forevermore. Such were the joys of a closed society. Especially in Catholic France, where the old guard tried its best for years to resist the Napoleonic nouveaux, with their extraordinary titles granted to them by the Emperor for having served him well on the battlefield. (Boni de Castellane’s family was titled long before the great Corsican came along, and his pink palace on Avenue Foch I remember well when I was young and lived nearby. Sadly, it is no longer there, torn down and replaced by apartment houses mostly inhabited by rich Arabs.)
