Keeping Civilization Alive, by Paul Rosenberg

The gatekeepers are trying to destroy, not preserve civilization. It looks like it’s up to us. From Paul Rosenberg at freemansperspective.com:

Keeping civilization alive has fallen to us. A lot of us grew up believing that Democracy would deliver the best of all possible worlds, but that pleasant promise has become very obviously false. Rulership is not equipped to supply honest and humane living; what they are equipped to supply is ever-more rulership, aka, enforcement.

And so there’s no one to cultivate civilization but us, and we must do this. As briefly as possible, I’ll describe our situation, then move on to what we must do.

The Present Ruling Model

As I noted recently, there are two primary models for attaining a civilized, humane, high-trust way of life:

  1. Cultivate civilization within people.
  2. Enforce civilization upon people.

In the best of the old days, governments contented themselves to deal with exterior threats, leaving any number of religions and philosophies free to cultivate civilization within the populace.

Since the the 1970s, however, we’ve seen a hostile takeover of morality… of the enforcement of moral norms by the state. (Via the regulation or criminalization of everything.) Under this model, the state must enforce proper speech and sexual procedures; it must punish and repress the original sin of racism; it must enforce Green to prevent an apocalypse… it must eliminate threat after threat, ultimately bringing us to a promised land.

Doug Casey on the Struggle Between the Powerful Forces of Centralization and Decentralization

This is indeed the struggle of our times, and decentralization is going to win. From Doug Casey at internationalman.com:

Centralization and Decentralization

International Man: We’re seeing several disturbing trends converge: currency debasement, increased surveillance, and more travel restrictions.

It seems governments everywhere—and the WEF elite behind them—are waging an all-out war on ordinary people worldwide.

What do you make of this trend, and where is it headed?

Doug Casey: Well, as I said earlier, the World Economic Forum is actually an informal United Nations, which is bad enough.

It’s populated by people who like the idea of powerful government in general, and a powerful world government in particular. When you look at history, you find that there are people who arise from seemingly nowhere and are able to put themselves in positions of huge influence and power. In today’s world, that usually happens through elections. But Bismarck, Napoleon, Mao, Kissinger, Schwab, Gates, and most others didn’t come up through elections for what they’re worth. They came up through force of personality, cleverness, and connections. Elections are essentially an Americanism.

Incidentally, I don’t believe in elections or “democracy” as means for determining who your boss is and who controls you. Elections have rarely been more than popularity contests at best, and more often, mob rule dressed in a coat and tie. As HL Mencken quipped, an election is just an advance auction on stolen goods. Now, more than ever, they’re just rubber stamps for political operators who are adept at using the media and other forms of influence to get the hoi polloi to robotically legitimize their rulers.

Victor Davis Hanson: The Thinnest Veneer Of Civilization Remains

Civilization rests on basic philosophies and behaviors, which can’t be taken for granted. The failure of those philosophies and behaviors can and has taken down civilizations. From Victor Davis Hanson at The Epoch Times via zerohedge.com:

Civilization is fragile. It hinges on ensuring the stuff of life…

To be able to eat, to move about, to have shelter, to be free from state or tribal coercion, to be secure abroad, and safe at home—only that allows cultures to be freed from the daily drudgery of mere survival.

Civilization alone permits humans to pursue sophisticated scientific research, the arts, and the finer aspects of culture.

So, the great achievement of Western civilization—consensual government, individual freedom, rationalism in partnership with religious belief, free market economics, and constant self-critique and audit—was to liberate people from daily worry over state violence, random crime, famine, and an often-unforgiving nature.

But so often the resulting leisure and affluence instead deluded arrogant Western societies into thinking that modern man no longer needed to worry about the fruits of civilization he took to be his elemental birthright.

As a result, the once prosperous Greek city-state, Roman Empire, Renaissance republics, and European democracies of the 1930s imploded—as civilization went headlong in reverse.

We in the modern Western world are now facing just such a crisis.

We talk grandly about the globalized Great Reset. We blindly accept the faddish New Green Deal. We virtue signal about defunding the police. We merely shrug at open borders. And we brag about banning fertilizers and pesticides, outlawing the internal combustion engine, and discounting Armageddon in the nuclear age—as if on autopilot we have already reached utopia.

But meanwhile Westerners are systematically destroying the very elements of our civilization that permitted such fantasies in the first place.

Saving Civilization, by Robert Gore

Savagery or civilization?

Imagine you had been picked as a juror for the Derek Chauvin trial. Before you hear a shred of evidence, you very well might make a decision most people would not only admit was the better part of valor, but that harmonized perfectly with prevailing morality.

Your pretrial verdict? Guilty. There had been threats since Chauvin was charged with second and third degree murder and second-degree manslaughter that acquittals would provoke rampaging riots. After the riots last summer, no one could doubt the threats’ credibility. A guilty verdict on all counts could avoid injuries, deaths, and billions of dollars in property damage. Against those consequences, what do the rights or the life of a policeman matter? You’re predetermined verdict is for the greater good.

Even if such considerations never entered your head, you’d need extraordinary courage and independence to impartially hear the evidence and if you thought it warranted, vote for acquittal. You’d have to withstand pressure from your fellow jurors. You’d run the risk that your personal information was leaked by some mainstream or social media scumbag and mostly peaceful thugs showed up at your door. You might be canceled out of a job, your business network, and your social circle. Your privacy would be obliterated and reputation ruined in the wilting glare of nonstop publicity and odium. Politicians and other public figures would denounce you.

The chance that one such person would land on the jury was remote, the chance of twelve nonexistent. Under the inverted standard of justice that prevailed, the outcome was always going to be dictated not by the facts of the case, reasoned consideration of the evidence, deliberation, and the applicable law, but by “social considerations,” which is a polite way of saying the mob.

The mob hailed the verdict as justice. It’s the same justice as John Gotti’s three acquittals after his goons intimidated jurors. Chauvin was guilty unless proven innocent beyond a “reasonable” doubt as defined by the mob. In the same vein, the policeman who shot and killed Ashley Babbitt at the Capitol is not guilty—without a trial—because that’s what the mob demanded. Such blatant contradiction is mob justice.

A morality that confers “rights” on mobs and strips those of an individual is the morality of savages. Maxine Waters is a savage, but so too are the members of the Minneapolis City Council who agreed to pay George Floyd’s estate $27 million before Chauvin’s trial had begun, the judge who recognized the prejudicial unfairness of Waters’ inflammatory statements but passed the buck for doing anything about it to the appellate courts, and the political, media, and celebrity jackals from Joe Biden on down who’ve been howling for Chauvin’s conviction since Floyd’s death.

Whatever the justifications they cite for their pre-verdict demands, they are implicitly insisting that Chauvin’s rights are of no consequence. When the “rights” of some outweigh the rights of one, anything goes. There are people who call for reducing the world’s population to 500 million, which implies a genocide of over 7 billion. That such people are on university faculties rather than denounced and shunned as advocates of mass murder shows just how far the barbarism of collectivist justification has advanced, even when the collective embraced is a fraction of the number of individuals whose lives are to be canceled!

Service and sacrifice are the watchwords of government, the ultimate mob. Who’s served and who’s sacrificed? There has never been a government that has not arrogated to itself the privilege of using force and fraud to strip individuals of their production, their property, their rights, their liberty, and ultimately, their lives. That privilege is governments’ defining essence and is the privilege that has always threatened humanity. The rationales and rhetoric are invariably collective: the demands of the mob supersede individual rights and individual justice.

The Age of Savagery, by Robert Gore

This is dedicated to Holly O and all those who know that civilization and savagery are not equivalent, refuse to overlook or excuse the latter, and will not be silenced. Let the voices of those silenced by threats or force strengthen the voices of those who can still speak.

Mendacity keeps breaking out to new highs. What’s behind the bull market in bullshit? A large group of small people clinging to a status quo that has enriched and empowered them like no status quo has ever enriched and empowered any cabal or coterie before. A much larger group—host and prey—so bamboozled they don’t recognize their own anemic decomposition as their lifeblood is sucked away. Many of the few who recognize the peril pin self-defeating hopes on the rube’s game of politics.

The purpose of the lies is astonishingly tawdry: to preserve a failing system for another few days, months, years, or best case, until those currently milking it are dead. That’s it, the only point: to keep the grift going just a little longer.

Find a threat, be it Islam, Russia, China, or creatures from Mars, to justify enormous expenditures on useless armaments and wars. Pretend that the ever-dwindling ranks of the productive can continue to support the ever-expanding ranks of the unproductive. Ignore the deadly inflection point, now reached, on the debt graph where the inevitable accretion of compounding interest wreaks its mathematically certain havoc. Pray that tax cuts or tariffs or central banks will make things all better. Allow intelligence agencies that ignore the Constitution and can’t explain why they need the information they have to collect even more of it. Invite people into your country that want to destroy it and hope for the best. Blame unapproved outcomes in the putrid political playpen on nefarious foreign machinations.

When lies are all you’ve got, truth is the enemy. Successful governments, if that’s not an oxymoron, don’t need repression. They are small and unobtrusive. Repression wouldn’t serve their limited purposes and would strain their limited resources. There’s an inverse relationship between success and repression. The best marker for the merit of a society is how it treats the truth. Those that seek the truth and honor their truth-finders and truth-tellers have earned the approbation “civilized.” Those that do the opposite, at the intellectual and invariably the physical level of degenerative violence, garner the condemnation “savage.”

It’s telling the names given to humanity’s epochs. Europe emerged from the Dark Ages and the names of subsequent ages—the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, the Age of Reason, the Industrial Revolution—denote the ascendance of truth-seeking. It’s a chore for second-rate nag historians to tally those ages’ imperfections. Directing one’s gaze upwards, one sees a roughly six-century efflorescence of inquiry, science, invention, thought, knowledge, art, literature, music, political philosophy, and human freedom, overall a single Age of Civilization.

In a tedious nod to politically correct nag historians, it’s hereby noted that one imperfection was slavery. A necessary rejoinder: slavery was virtually eliminated in those nations that embarked towards civilization, but flourishes still in lands of the savage. Under much of Islam today, women are chattel. There’s a global black market in children who are forced into servitude and sexual submission. In many parts of the world, human beings own other human beings outright, the definition of slavery.

It’s intellectual depravity to maintain that civilization and savagery are equivalent, overlook or excuse the latter, or silence those who refuse to equilibrate, overlook, or excuse. Project Silence is most advanced in Europe. Under “hate speech” laws, notably in Great Britain, France, Germany, and Sweden, public opposition to Middle Eastern and Northern African immigration and public notice of immigrant crime have been criminalized.

Often, the crimes themselves—through lax or nonexistent enforcement of existing laws—have been decriminalized. In further appeasement of the immigrants, law and its enforcement have been ceded to them. In some districts the horrors of Sharia reign. Only recently have European leaders began to concede that there are places in their countries where non-Muslims dare not go.

Every epoch contains the fruits of prior epochs and the seeds of future ones. While there are usually no bright historical lines demarcating one epoch from the next, the transition from the Age of Civilization to the Age of Savagery is an exception. The years 1913 and 1914 mark that transition.

With the Sixteenth, or Income Tax, Amendment, ratified February 3, 1913, the US government asserted first claim on the products of its people’s labor. The Federal Reserve Act, enacted December of the same year, allowed the government to replace gold-backed currency with fiat units backed by nothing but promises and the legal tender mandate. The two enactments legitimized government and government-central bank theft (through the hidden tax of currency depreciation) and fraud. The freest nation in history had reversed course.

As if to provide tangible confirmation that it had entered an Age of Savagery, in 1914 the world embarked on its second bloodiest war ever. World War I killed 18 million and wounded another 23 million, split about two-thirds and one-third between military and civilian casualties.

It was a fitting kickoff to the new age, and would be followed by the horrors and death tolls of Nazi Germany, communist Soviet Union and China, another, even deadlier world war, and countless smaller scale wars and genocides. The twentieth century was easily the bloodiest in human history, but its savagery proceeds apace in the twenty-first, which may come to rival its predecessor.

Theft using violence or its threat is the quintessence of traditional savagery, but fraud, especially in modern societies, shouldn’t be underestimated. Savages wear Brioni suits, have diplomas from the best schools, and fill the highest positions in business and government. It is the belief that others’ lives are the means to one’s own ends, and the willingness to employ whatever means necessary–from lies to slavery to murder–to achieve those ends, that distinguishes the savage.

Savages are savages wherever you find them. Destruction and death are their means and only ends. Those who would tell the truth are in a pincer between primitives. Truth threatens the primitives above who are imposing their version of order, and the primitives below imposing their version of chaos. The unifying element is hatred of human freedom, progress, and greatness, hallmarks of the Age of Civilization now passed.

Three steps forward, two steps back appears to be humanity’s course. After six centuries forward, it’s stepping backward. Savagery waxes and wanes, but never wins. The lives savages most desperately want to end are their own. Those who rightfully resist savagery in the name of self-defense, honor, the truth, and freedom have the right and the responsibility to give them what they want.

The Decline and Fall of Collectivism, by Butler Shaffer

A society is doomed when it moves from protecting individual rights to protecting institutional prerogatives. From Butler Shaffer at lewrockwell.com:

“There is no there there.”

– Gertrude Stein

The study of history has long been an enjoyable activity for me. A conclusion I have drawn from it has been that civilizations are created by individuals; they are destroyed by collectives. One can see such dynamics at work in what has been taking place in recent decades in the collapse of a once life-sustaining Western Civilization. I have discussed this process in previous articles, as well as in two of my books: Boundaries of Order, and The Wizards of Ozymandias. What began as the creation of values that enhance and celebrate life, ended up sanctifying the systems generated by expectations that the preservation of once-successful forms would assure future well-being. Liberty and spontaneity that was essential to creativity became subordinated to the structured, status quo needs of organizations that are now considered to be ends in themselves and, thus, “too big to fail.” When individualism was sacrificed to an institutional imperative, Western Civilization began its death-march. I explored this theme in another book, Calculated Chaos: Institutional Threats to Peace and Human Survival.

In a culture grounded in individual liberty, any system that insisted upon the maintenance of existing conditions and not having to adapt to environmental changes would quickly face extinction. But if political institutions are available to help preserve the status quo by forcibly regulating the behavior of others, those able to control the political machinery can overcome this need to remain resilient. By fostering enforceable rules that standardize and make uniform the actions of others, the state gives birth to collectivism, a concept that one dictionary defines as “a doctrine or system that makes the group or state responsible for the social and economic welfare of its members.” This idea produces consequences that are detrimental to the long-term vibrancy of cultures that embrace its stifling assumptions. Entropic forces accumulate when the liberty of men and women to adapt themselves to the needs for change are frustrated by the state suppressing behavior; a behavior that is contrary to the interests of those who enjoy political power. With “entropy” defined as “energy unavailable for productive work,” it becomes clear how the state’s regulation, control, and prohibition of creative activity contributes to the disintegration of civilizations.

He Said That? 7/17/15

From Will Rogers:

You can’t say civilization isn’t advancing; in every war they kill you in a new way.
